Fight Fear with Fear

Synopsis

Fear Itself: Fearsome Four #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Fear grips the world after the invasion of The Serpent and Earth’s heroes are all occupied with greater emergencies. So it’s Howard the Duck left to track down Man-Thing, rampaging through Manhattan. Manny comes upon a teenage couple in a park and as they are terrified by his sudden appearance they are burnt to a crisp. Howard calls in She-Hulk to help as the increased level of fear on Earth will make Man-Thing more of a danger than ever before….

Elsewhere, Kyle Richmond has returned to the role of Nighthawk and he is delighting in terrorizing a gang of hoods, ramping up the scare factor and staring down a punk with a gun. Nighthawk comes upon Howard and Jen, knowing they are looking for Man-Thing. Not far away, a mob is fighting the Frankenstein Monster. Nighthawk and She-Hulk believe that Frank is causing the local outbreak of fear and try to subdue him; Howard warns them that they are wrong and calls on them to stop but he is kicked across the street. Enraged, Howard leaps on the Monster’s shoulders and the four misfit heroes team up and drive the mob off. But it’s not they who have done it but Man-Thing behind them. Manny’s control of the power of the Nexus of All Realities mutates the four heroes into more grotesque versions of themselves and they attack Man-Thing….

Fear Itself: Fearsome Four #1 Review by (July 30, 2024)

Review: The strangest tie-in to FEAR ITSELF has an oddball ad hoc team of heroes fighting a menacing Man-Thing. That latter idea is brilliant, as Manny has always been tied to fear, it makes perfect sense that an event centering on fear should have an effect on him/her/it. And the choice of heroes is also inspired: Howard makes for a great narrator and his crochety personality makes him the only Marvel hero who would so faithfully pursue Man-Thing. She-Hulk is a welcome addition to anything though a darker take on Nighthawk seems a bit contrived. But to work the Frankenstein Monster into a contemporary story and have no one question it (except Frankie himself) is near genius. The story itself is a bit too convoluted to work properly and a few bits don’t work at all (the choices of the heroes’ greatest fears don’t seem right and are passed over too quickly). But minor bits on the nature of fear, friendship, responsibility, etc. sprinkled throughout are nice little Easter eggs of a different sort.

Comments: This tie-in miniseries falls between FEAR ITSELF #3 and 4. The other Nighthawk Kyle Richmond refers to is Joaquin Pennysworth, introduced in THE LAST DEFENDERS and returning in VENGEANCE, two miniseries. The mutated Fearsome Four are from the universe designated Earth-11086; they appear only in this issue and the next. Art by Mike Kaluta, Ryan Bodemheim, and Simon Bisley. Colors by Chris Sotomayor, Tony Avina, and Simon Bisley.
