Synopsis
Kate Bishop has left her New York partnership with the other Hawkeye, Clint Barton, and has returned to Los Angeles County, this time in Venice Beach rather than Santa Monica. She wanted to apply for a PI License quoting her Young Avengers experience, and giving Clint, Jessica Jones and America Chavez as character references. But she can't afford the application fee. But she's still opened up an office (in her small apartment).
It appears that she actually crossed the USA chasing a particular mark, Brad, and now she's spotted him at his favourite surfing spot. But while she takes photos and tracks him off the beach she spots 3 men conspicuously in business suits. And when she sees them enter a bank with guns and presidential masks its obvious there's a robbery going down, with a getaway car nearby with obscured licence plates. Shedding her outer clothes, tying back her hair and grabbing her (collapsible) bow and quiver of arrows she leaps into action in her purple Hawkeye costume.
1st action is to put arrows into the car's rear tyres. Then she enters the bank and clocks the surrounding details. 1 thief is felled by a blow from the bow to the back of his head. A smoke arrow sets the fire alarm off and also gasses another thief. The 3rd guy drops a bag of money when she pins his clothing to the wall with several arrows. He complains that 1 of the arrows nicked him. She exits announcing her Hawkeye name as the police and fire brigade arrive. But she's lost track of Brad.
She returns to her home/office where she's only partially unpacked. Almost immediately the bell rings as the door opens, but it's not a prospective client. It's a woman named Ramone who complains that Kate's classic Firebird is parked in front of her surf shop. She also comments disparagingly on her homemade sign taped to the door - a piece of paper with the word HAWK above a (poor) drawing of an eye above the word INVESTIGATIONS. Is she a PI or an optometrist? Then the door bell rings again and it *is* a client. Ramone leaves telling Kate she can have free parking for today.
But the client was expecting the male Hawkeye and leaves. This sets the pattern for the following visitors. 14 of them want the 'real' Hawkeye, 12 of which have a grudge to settle with him. And 7 other people were looking for an optometrist.
But then finally a real client turns up specifically for a PI/superhero who doesn't care which 1. Her name's Mikka and she's a junior at Kinney College who writes for the college newspaper and has a blog. But she's stopped because of harassment. She thinks it's 1 man but when she gets him blocked he turns up again with a new online id. She's brought some of the most recent and worst examples of his messages. She complained to the cops several times but even the ones who treat her fairly say there's nothing they can do because the threat isn't 'credible' enough. Her girlfriend suggested a PI might help. Kate takes the case.
Early next day she goes to Kinney College to search their computer system, but can't get in without a Student ID pass. So she 'borrows' 1 and a College jacket from 2 unsuspecting students, and dons glasses and ties back her hair to make her look more like the photo. And she's in. But she can't get anywhere in the system until a student named Quinn who works in the library helps her, despite suspecting that she's not who her ID says she is. She tells him she's a detective and shows him Mikka's material and she hires him to work on the case by tracking down the source of the messages.
Kate leaves to keep watch on Mikka during her day. On the way out she returns jacket and ID to 2 surprised owners, claiming she found them. Almost immediately she spots a youth surreptitiously taking pics of her client. But he spots her spotting him and runs away. He exits the College grounds but Kate runs up a sloping palm tree to leap over the wall and land on him. He protests he's not a stalker as she grabs his phone and finds his name, Larry Gort, and address.
But as she takes Gort off to the police station we see Mikka get grabbed in an alley and bundled into a van. Leaving behind her bag and a TBC flyer that we've also seen dotted around the area, especially on campus.
