Hulk #34 Review by (June 7, 2022)

Review: Really enjoyed this issue with its exciting space scenes giving way to a redo of the classic Planet Hulk arc many years ago. Artist Carlo Pagulayan brings a heft to the subject which regular guy Gabriel Hardman regularly lacks, making the battles between the powerful types more brutal in their effectiveness. One interesting bit has the drugged Rulk wondering if he was sent to this planet by the machinations of Bruce Banner or the Avengers.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Hulk #34 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Red Hulk accompanies the Space Shuttle into orbit to approach a Russian craft called the Vensk, which is surrounded by an odd purple aura. Rulk’s part follows: he leaps across space to reach the Russian ship and enters. He makes his way to the control center to find the cosmonauts dead, their bodies emaciated. Then the rockets fire and the Vensk vanishes into a vortex…and comes to an unknown solar system where two planets orbit close to one another. He rides the capsule down to the red planet and ends up caught in a giant web. Warriors flying giant insects arrives and he is gassed with pollen from a plant and loses consciousness….

He awakens, trapped in mindroot to keep him docile; the shaman Alturi manipulates the mindroot so that Rulk can understand their language. He learns he is on the planet Tiran which is at war with their neighboring world Randaa; the warlike natives assume he has been sent by their enemies as they know of no other planets. King Warka arrives atop a gigantic elephant-like beast to see the captured monster. Warka beats Rulk into the ground, announcing plans to have him fight another monster in the arena. Alturi is ordered to drug Rulk to make him easier to lead to the arena but Rulk has a deal to cut with the shaman….

The next day in the arena, Rulk faces his opponent, a huge reptilian beast called Kargus the Deadly. Instead Rulk yanks on a long cord, pulling the King into the arena and then proceeds to beat him to a pulp. Afterward, Alturi hails him as the Red King, which wasn’t part of the plan….
