Indestructible Hulk Special (2013 series) #1 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Story continued from ALL-NEW X-MEN SPECIAL #1.

Hulk has just completed his latest mission for SHIELD, destroying super-tarantulas in the desert, and SHIELD agents have set up a large box to capture him. Hulk approaches the box and it pops open, releasing a flock of…puppies. He is so delighted that he immediately reverts to Bruce Banner; Bruce is told he is needed urgently elsewhere and he is put aboard a helicopter and delivered to Empire State University. There, Spider-Man (Otto Octavius) and Dr. David Jude greet him and he meets the young X-Men (Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman); together they bring him up to speed on the current problem. Hank McCoy’s hypothesis is that somehow, when the X-Men were brought through time, Dr. Octopus was accidentally brought with them, which hypothesis Spider-Man (who, remember, is Dr. Octopus) rejects. Bruce asks if they would like to move the investigation to SHIELD’s facilities but neither Spider-Man nor the X-Men want the government to become aware of their situations. And so…the scientists get to work, while Scott, Jean, and Bobby sit around, bored. Spider-Man seethes over the villainous Doc Ock, Bruce wonders how Dr. Jude has come down in reputation, Hank flirts with Molly, and then they are interrupted by a roar Bruce recognizes. They head to the football stadium upstairs to see Cyclops, Marvel Girl, and Iceman fighting the Abomination. Bruce asks Spider-Man to take the X-Men to safety then transforms into Hulk and the two green giants throw punches. Spider-Man suggests they find the X-Men’s time machine as he is now more open to the time travel hypothesis and they depart but the ground opens up under the ruckus and Molly falls in; Hank stays behind to rescue her. Spider-Man, Dr. Jude, and the X-Men fly off in a helicopter; Hulk tears the head off the Abomination, revealing it is a robot; Hank and Molly discover a secret laboratory under the field. They discover that Dr. Jude built robotic versions of Doctor Octopus and the Abomination and Hank contacts Spider-Man with this revelation. Seeing that he has been exposed, Dr. Jude’s eyes light up and the helicopter explodes….

Indestructible Hulk Special (2013 series) #1 Review by (March 24, 2026)

Review: ARMS OF THE OCTOPUS continues! Whenever there is a complex situation requiring thoughtful interaction, scientific rigor, and delicate manipulation, tossing the Hulk in wrecks everything. The issue starts with one of the most surprising and delightful means of dealing with the Hulk on a bad day and aptly fits the tone of the story. Said tone is set by Bruce Banner’s wry narration, matching the similar voice Hank McCoy brought to Part One. The only problem is the unattractive art, similar to that in Part One, but somehow lacking the charm. Oh well, but the issue and the crossover are highly entertaining.

Comments: Part two of the three-part crossover, “The Arms of the Octopus.” Title comes from a poem by Anne Sexton. Bruce Banner/Hulk started working for SHIELD in INDESTRUCTIBLE HULK #1. Abomination was killed by Red Hulk in HULK (2008) #1 and resurrected in HULK (2014) #2. Variant available with interlocking covers by J. Scott Campbell.
