Synopsis

Infernal Hulk, The (2026 series) #5 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Bruce and Betty attend the funeral of their co-worker Nettie’s son Tommy, killed when the Infernal Hulk overran his army base. As Nettie weeps over the coffin, the preacher states that Tommy represent what no monster can touch, something incorruptible….

In Cincinnati, Infernal Hulk leads his/her monster horde over one of the bridges spanning the Ohio River. The Avengers arrive in a Quinjet but before they can pursue any action, the glowing figure of the One Above All descends to take on His ancient enemy, the Eldest. The two fight and One Above All knocks Hulk into the river but Hulk leaps back and tears off the glowing outer covering of One Above All, exposing an angelic form. While they battle, Hulk/Eldest taunts her opponent with being only the slave of the true One Above All who responds that as the One’s avatar, he is effectively His being. Infernal Hulk tears the avatar apart and leaps away. Witnessing this, Iron Man says that it didn’t go their way but they do have one thing they didn’t have before….

Infernal Hulk, The (2026 series) #5 Review by (March 18, 2026)

Review: A turning point in Bruce’s life, along with a turning point in the Avengers’ lives. We’ll find out more about the latter next time but Bruce’s course is clear: he must go back to fight Infernal Hulk. Finally, Infernal Hulk takes center stage (for the first half of the issue), facing a comic book version of a Supreme Being. The second half focuses on Bruce Banner and his decision to return but as what? He’s separated from Hulk and I’m sure the Avengers can’t do anything to reunite him so that’s likely all on Banner’s head next time.

The big surprise is that artists Kev Walker and Cam Smith, who have been drawing the more peaceful Bruce sections, are now tasked with the entire issue and they show that they can do the Nic Klein thing, namely, gruesome horror. They do a great job in the two major action scenes, I-Hulk vs. One Above All and Bruce and Betty against the Tommy-thing. And they do it by transitioning the usually tranquil Bruce and Betty straight into the graphic gore bits, bringing together the two styles which mirrors what is going on in the narrative. Nice move.

Comments: The history of the One Above All is extremely complicated and can’t even be summarized; shortest possible version: One Above All is God and looks like Jack Kirby. Got it?

Major Irony: The preacher pronounces Tommy’s soul incorruptible but his body proves to be very corruptible. Ick.
