Legacy of Doom Chapter 1: A Knight in Hell

Synopsis

Iron Man: Legacy of Doom #1 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 4.5 stars
While melting down some old armors, Tony Stark looks at the memory chips and gets a surprise: one chip shows an encounter with Doctor Doom he does not remember. Concentrating, Tony now begins the recall this mysterious meeting. He was in space as Iron Man, repairing a Stark satellite when a holographic projection of Doctor Doom appeared before him, with an urgent command to come to Doom's castle in Latveria. Iron Man heads there straightaway and finds himself in the midst of a military assault on Doom's castle by his own people. Entering the castle, he finds Doom preparing to use a neutron pulse engine to wipe out the opposing forces. Iron Man pleads for their lives and Doom grants him the ten minutes it would take to prepare the neutron weapon to try to save them. Shellhead jets out over the battlefield, destroying the planes, missiles, and tanks, scaring the soldiers into full retreat. On his return, Doom explains the nature of the threat: Mephisto has found a way to hasten the end of the world; Doom has modified his Time Cube to traverse other dimensions. He also has remote transmitters to recall the Cube to pick them up; Iron Man satisfies himself that there is no trick to these and they set out....

They arrive in a Hell that combines Dante's Inferno with the works of M.C. Esher and are set upon by its gelatinous inhabitants. Holding them off with their weapons, the two travelers dash into an office marked “Manager,” where they find Mephisto. The Evil Lord gives a tiny metal object to Doom, who departs via the Time Cube, as Iron Man finds out he has been tricked, his escape device does not work —and Doom has traded him to Mephisto for that metal sliver....

Review / Commentaries

Iron Man: Legacy of Doom #1 Review by (October 17, 2017)
Comments: Title is a pun on “a night in Hell.” Iron Man's and Doctor Doom's first teaming was in IRON MAN #149-150; their second teaming was in IRON MAN #249-250, but those events were erased from both men's memories.

Review: The third in the Iron Man/Doctor Doom team-up trilogy plays for bigger stakes with a visit to Hell and the entire world threatened by a genuinely creepy monster. And the goofy part is that it is all over an overdue book. Which is great because the story is a bit lacking in humor, aside from a smart-mouthed Merlin (toned down quite a bit from IRON MAN #249-250) and Mephisto. In fact, Mephisto is portrayed as quite a jokester—or should I say “Joker” as most of his funny bits would be easily imagined coming from the Clown Prince of Crime in a Batman comic. Like Loki and Nightmare, Mephisto has been converted into the stereotypical snide and sarcastic bad guy that everyone wants these days. Messes with the characterization but makes the comics much more entertaining. So, the usual spectacular art and clever writing we've come to expect from the Michelinie/Layton team-up. The only debit is a weak resolution with Tony having to truly believe to defeat the monster, sort of like clapping to bring Tinkerbell back to life in PETER PAN. Otherwise, very good.
