Book Six: Best Of The Rest

Synopsis

Iron Man: The Inevitable #6 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 3.5 stars
Iron Man's damaged armour starts to self-repair as he fights back against Spymaster. Spymaster's wife Greta watches by video from a bunker. Spymaster throws laser beams and rockets at him, but IM defeats them all and destroys the villain's control console.

Throughout the fight Spymaster continues to claim that Iron Man is Tony Stark. And that they are arch-foes destined to battle. (Even though he's only just taken over the role of Spymaster.) IM denies that he's Stark, and also denies that Spymaster (any of the holders of the name) was ever a major opponent.

As IM smashes Spymaster's helmet open, Living Laser makes his appearance. His arrival kills Greta Abbott. But his presence allows Spymaster to slip away.

IM doesn't want to fight Laser. (He has spent much of this series freeing Arthur Parks from being trapped inside a laser weapon.) He leads Laser deep into the by-now-burning building, where he appears to try to trap him somewhere. But it fails.

Realising that he can't fight all this living energy, Iron Man does the opposite. He uses his chest beam to absorb Laser into his armour.

Later at the Stark International Coney Island HQ Iron Man transfers Laser's energy into a specially-designed prison cell.

Later still at Avengers Tower Tony is greeted by Jarvis. And he has accepted that his life as Iron Man will continue.

Review / Commentaries

Iron Man: The Inevitable #6 Review by (February 18, 2014)
Living Laser will feature as 1 of MODOK's 11 in that Super-Villain Team-Up series. Then he will continues as a general Avengers foe, especially during Dark Reign. His return to Iron Man will be in #511 as part of Mandarin's growing army. Tony Stark updates his database and indicates that he doesn't know who Spymaster is. But I would have though he'd recognise him when he broke his facemask off. And I would have thought he could find out whose mansion he was fighting in. Spymaster 3 will continue to operate after Spymaster 1 is revealed to be still alive in Dark Reign: Made Men. He will kill Happy Hogan in IM(2005)#13. He will infiltrate Stark Resilient as Len Pimacher in IM(2008)#28 and stay until he dies in #519. So presumably the Spymaster in Infinity: The Heist is the still-alive #1. Stark still hasn't come clean about being Iron Man again, but he will do so before Civil War. Another possible meaning of the title Inevitable is the inevitability of his charade being exposed.
