Story Name:

Stark Wars: Chapter 7 Reborn Again

Synopsis

Iron Man #231 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 4.5 stars
As the news media reports that Iron Man is dead, killed by Firepower, the seriously injured Tony Stark decides what to do next. Reveal: The Iron Man armor was empty, holding only a blood supply to make Shellhead's death look convincing. And now Tony is considering leaving Iron Man dead....

Out in Arizona, the time has come for Edwin Cord to turn the Firepower armor over to the US military—but he refuses, threatening to blackmail the brass with the revelation that Firepower was created to suppress civilian protest. Cord then uses the intimidating monster to scare executives and corporations into refusing to do business with Stark Enterprises, moving on to actual sabotage to exact revenge from Tony. Firepower then confronts Tony to tell him exactly what is going on. Tony goes home...

...and creates an all-new suit of armor, this time with a built-in security device. With all the trouble the last armor caused, Tony determines that after Firepower is dealt with, he will destroy this new armor....

As a new Stark branch opens up, Firepower arrives to take it down—and the new Iron Man is waiting for him. As the bad guy attacks, Iron Man reveals all the new weapons and defenses he possesses, sending Firepower crashing into the ground. Firepower attempts to fire the big missile again but damage has wedged the missile tight in his armor. With his new capabilities, Shellhead can uncover the missile's cancellation code and stop the blast that threatened the crowd. Iron Man then reveals that he could have removed Jim Taggert from the armor at any time...

Returning home, Tony continues to brood over the armor, deciding that his responsibility to fight evil demands he keep the new armor. Tony then lies down for a good night's sleep....

Review / Commentaries

Iron Man #231 Review by (May 23, 2017)
Comments: “Stark Wars” was later retitled “Armor Wars” for trade publication. Jack Taggert is recruited by the Mandarin in a new Firepower armor in IRON MAN #513. The Firepower in IRON MAN #288 is a different man, David Roberts. The television series seen on the first page are WHEEL OF FORTUNE, GILLIGAN'S ISLAND, THE BRADY BUNCH, JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS, and SPEED RACER. Rae Lacoste is mentioned briefly so apparently the relationship is still going on. Hindsight is always 20/20: Marcy Pearson suggests Bill Cosby as their new corporate spokesperson; he should be less controversial than Iron Man—until about 2015. Oh and it's the introduction of Iron Man Armor Model 9.

Review: And the new Iron Man kicks Firepower's shiny metal butt.... A fine issue with the scenes of Tony's construction of the new armor and his showcasing its abilities are a collective knockout. It's what happens next that is the real knockout....
