Synopsis

Iron Man #70 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 4 stars
The unconscious Iron Man is jetting out of control high into the stratosphere. He is detected by an American defense base which mistakes him for an incoming rocket and fires missiles at him; his life-support system has automatically kicked in, waking him up and he easily shoots down the missiles with his repulsor rays….
Back in China, Mandarin has sent his giant deadly android Ultimo against the Yellow Claw who has usurped Mandy’s fortress. Sunfire, seeking revenge for his capture by Mandarin, suddenly appears and attacks Ultimo, while the villain enters the castle through a secret entrance….
At this point we learn that the mysterious Black Lama is approaching supervillains all over the world offering the Golden Globe to the world’s mightiest villain to be determined by mortal combat….
In Vietnam, Marty March leads Roxie Gilbert to a hidden city underground. Back in New York, Happy reveals to Pepper his plan for saving their marriage: Happy will apply for the job of Stark’s chief of security, ending their job-related separation…
The Mandarin fights his way past the giant automatons unleashed by the Yellow Claw, blasts open the doors to confront his foe, destroys the weapon brought against him, and breaks the Claw’s neck with a karate chop. It is then that he discovers his enemy is a robot double—which explodes. The Mandarin, shocked by this deception, collapses and dies. Claw orders his servant Loc Do to dispose of the body; he does—but the menial has his own plans for the rings of power…
Meanwhile outside the castle, Iron Man arrives and helps Sunfire destroy Ultimo, blasting it until its eyebeams go out of control, creating an avalanche which buries it. Believing the Mandarin to be dead in the castle, Sunfire thanks Iron Man for saving his life and departs. The hero must now face the Yellow Claw alone….

Iron Man #70 Review by (December 31, 2013)
Review: Non-stop action in this mighty issue which is of the “good guy and bad guy team up to fight a common enemy” trope. Plus we get brief updates on some running subplots and a hint at a story arc to come—the War of the Super-Villains! I was thrilled at the prospect back in 1974 so stick around for ish #74 and we’ll see how it holds up!

Comments: Part three of four parts, despite the title. Mandarin‘s consciousness will completely control the body of Loc Do and he will be back in issue #98.
