Mighty Thor, The (2011 series) #1

A weak start on both fronts (story and art wise, but more story wise), for this new Thor volume, considering writer Fraction and artist Coipel are of the best in the business. The story is dull, without "spark" as if Fraction is not quiet "getting it" yet; he needs time. And the art, although solid in parts, suffers in the diving deep scene where the sequence (storytelling) is truly hard to follow. Coipel does draw an incredibly beautiful Sif in bed though.

Review: I concur with Julio in all but one point. The story is weak, being yet another “magic artifact is discovered and powerful beings fight over it” tale, and the scenes of Pastor Mike seem a bit worrisome; since it’s unusual to deal explicitly with the Christian faith in comic books, very few comics writers get it right and Fraction is not making me confident of anything different here. We’ll have to see where this goes. Meanwhile, the battle of Thor and Sif with the monsters that look like metallic centipedes is too chaotic but kudos to the colorists for that delicate—if unattractive—blue and pink scheme. The one point of disagreement: while the nudie pic of Sif was well-done, I don’t like my comic books flirting with porn like everything else in the culture. That’s just the way I am.
