Synopsis

Mortal Thor, The (2025 series) #8 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Amora the Enchantress comes to Ullr the Wanderer with a request for him to create a new weapon for her. He collaborates with Athena, Greek Goddess of Wisdom and of War, to produce a bow and arrow, the arrow, when fired, will fly until it strikes the foe for whom it is intended. Unlike all other weapons, the bow is irrevocable, regret cannot make the arrow turn back. Amora shrugs and moves on. She steps outside and fires the arrow into the air. And now at the bottom of each page we see the arrow flying across the Ten Realms until it reaches its target later in the story….

Magni and his sidekick Blackjack O’Hare are visiting Jotunheim at the invitation of Mother Tjarvva, the sorceress. She explains how the throne has been empty since Loki, a figurehead only, abdicated. The wizard Skrymir tried to take the throne but he was killed by Thor; his wounded head is regenerating and when he recovers he will becomes the Wizard-King but Tjarvva doesn’t like that idea so she has invited Magni to come to her aid. Blackjack tells her that Magni will not take the Frost Giants’ throne. Tjarvva tells them that they have chosen their ruler but this person is captive in another realm, one where no Frost Giant can go. And so…

…Magni drives his father’s chariot to Muspelheim, Realm of Fire and Flame. Blackjack notes how their weapons are at a disadvantage in such a hot place. They come upon a Fire Demon and Magni draws the weapon the Frost Giants have given him, the Sword of Solid Snow, and slices the demon in half. They fight more foes, Blackjack’s bullets melting in flight before blinding an enemy with molten lead and Magni punching him in the face. Magni then mounts the throne of Muspelheim and jams the sword down into the seat. And out of the sword grows the ice witch Tjarvva who now has the power of a Witch-Queen to thrive in such a hot environment. And from Muspelheim’s dungeons, she summons Arinn, Regent of the Hearth’s Fire, to be regent of Jotunheim. And the subjects of Mupelheim tentatively agree, until Surtur returns. And all is at peace…

…until Amora’s arrow reaches its target…and kills Blackjack.

Athena asks Amora why Blackjack. The Enchantress responds that Blackjack was the only one keeping Magni from taking the throne of Asgard and therefore preventing Amora from wielding the power of the All-Mother. Athena starts to point out what’s wrong with that but Amora interrupts her with a blast of lightning and goes on to dream of what Asgard will be once her son Magni is King….

Mortal Thor, The (2025 series) #8 Review by (March 24, 2026)

Review: A rather interesting issue: The framing device of Amora’s arrow raises a concern in our minds, wondering who is going to die before the issue is out. And the final panel on each page keeps the matter alive while the plot moves to the Frost Giants asking Magni to rescue their next king from Muspelheim. And the quest is a thrilling one as we have no reason to think that the Frost Giants are plotting against Magni as their request to boldly go where no Frost Giant has gone before is entirely reasonable. And then the big shock comes: Amora’s target was Blackjack O’Hare. Much of the surprise came from the victim being such an inconsequential character. All he seemed to be was a variation on Rocket Raccoon (or Bucky O’Hare) and largely forgettable. But he achieves retroactive importance in his death. And the bad guy (Amora) wins—for now, we’re still on the upswing of the tale. We’ve still got a few issues left before Mortal Thor returns to make everything all right.

Comments: Longfellow’s “The Arrow and the Song” opens this tale appropriately. First appearance of Tjarvva and Arinn. Skrymir a/k/a Utgard-Loki was introduced in BALDER THE BRAVE #3 and killed in IMMORTAL THOR #1.
