Synopsis

Ms Marvel Annual #1 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
In Atlantic City Kamala Khan and her school friends Bruno Carrelli, Nakia Bahadir and Zoe Zimmer are skipping school for Ditch Day, the day before Homecoming. At the amusement park Bruno wants to go on the Serpent's Cyclone but the girls persuade him to start with easier rides, and he seems to be enjoying himself. The 4 have promised to communally be each other's Homecoming 'dates'. But as they're being winched up for a big drop Zoe confesses that she's agreed to join Lauren Fletcher on her dad's private jet. The others quickly agree that they'd do the same. Afterwards they split up. Nakia and Zoe queue up for the Wheel while Bruno and Kamala go for 4 rides on the Cyclone. And afterwards Bruno throws up as Nakia predicted.

Even more afterwards the pair each have something to ask the other. Kamala wants to know if he's tracked down the Inventors. Bruno mumbles something and I think he was going to ask her to make Homecoming a real date for them. (The Inventors are bird-like humanoids who have taken the names of human inventors. They featured in the Dark Web: Ms Marvel mini-series.)

Then they hear a disturbance from a tent with a makeshift sign "The Great Multitude And His Souls From Beyond". Inside they see that a costumed char has brought back a man's dead wife Maria, but the angry man is complaining that his Maria wasn't completely orange in body and clothes. For his part Multitude is angry that the man calls *him* a soulless robot (he prefers 'synthetic person' and he *does* have a soul). Now the audience flees as Multitude creates a giant orange Hulk which grabs his assailant. Kamala turns into Ms Marvel (Bruno knows her secret id) and attacks the Hulk with her elastic limbs, but he falls against the ferris wheel which breaks free from its mooring. And of course Nakia and Zoe have made it through the queue to be on the wheel at this time. Ms M grows big enough to stop the wheel from falling, but is surprised to see giant Hulk helping stabilise it along with giant orange Groot and Thing. This allows Ms M to rescue people from the Wheel by letting them slide down her arms.

The police arrive so Bruno and Kamala hurry Multitude away to a back room in the Circle Q convenience store where Bruno works. On the way he tells them about the Soul Stone which has bonded to him and sometimes takes over. But the Stone also gives him the ability to project the soul of anyone living or dead. Bruno says he can hide out in this room for a while. They only use it for gaming and secure Internet searches. Multitude says he can detect the current search looking for the Inventors. Kamala explains that they are cyborg bird-people with the minds of famous scientists, who she stopped kidnapping children for experiments. They've been doing some other stuff lately but she and Bruno can't figure out what they're up to.

Next day Kamala's family are getting her ready for the Homecoming dance, even though her mother doesn't want her dancing with boys. Then she gets a call from Bruno that Multitude has gone after they found where the Inventors are. We see him entering a barn with an orange Wolverine, where the cyborgs welcome him to the techno-organic forest they'd built filled with nests and eggs hatching more birds to attack humans (as in Hitchcock's The Birds). They intend to kill off all humans and create a utopia for birds. Mutltitude thinks this isn't right and sics Logan and an orange Captain Marvel on them, and a battle begins.

Ms Marvel now drops in to join Multitude and following her prompting he manifests Captain America as well. In retaliation the bird-borgs hatch all their attack birds. On Kamala's theory that birds hate snakes Multitude brings forth the already giant-size Fin Fang Foom. The Inventors run away, and Ms Marvel and Multitude part as friends.

Kamala attends Homecoming in a stunning dress. Bruno has a wonky bow tie. Everyone has fun.

We see Multitude on top of a train tossing a baseball to the orange 'ghost' of a probably-famous player. Then Prince Otherone, bearer of the Power Stone in his new id Apex, shows up to teach him how to do this hero stuff right (yeah, sure!).

Story 2: The Death Stone Saga chapter 4
Writer Derek Landy. Artist Sarah Pichelli. Colourist Mattia Iacono. Letterer Travis Lanham. Editor Nick Lowe

Nick Fury Jr visits the grave of Phil Coulson to find it broken open and empty, and the gun and pager he left with the body discarded. He's here because the pager went off last issue. Captain Marvel joins him and asks if Coulson had ever resurrected before. Fury says he doesn't think so (another suggestion that the Coulson who led Mephisto's Squadron Supreme was his creation like the Squad). Carol Danvers detects a strange energy here which is tantalisingly familiar. (Obviously the new Infinity Stone the Death Stone.) Nick isn't sure that Coulson *has* been reborn, maybe just his body has been stolen. But Carol suggests that someone disarmed him, arguing that he was alive. (I don't find that a logical argument.) Fury suggests she go back to running the Avengers while he continues the investigation alone.

And we see Coulson tied to a chair and foaming at the mouth.

Review / Commentaries

Ms Marvel Annual #1 Review by (August 2, 2024)
The main story is written by Iman Vellani & Sabir Pirzada.

Multitude was 1st seen in the 2021 Avengers Annual, part of the Infinite Destinies Annuals event. We don't know where the robot named Ward came from but it was apparently his task to investigate the nature of the soul. Which was why it was apt that the Soul Stone merge with him.
He's only made 1 more app since then in Guardians Of The Galaxy (2023) #9 where he gave Gamora and Mantis the soul of Drax to restore to him.

The bearers of the Reality, Space and Time Stones met up in the Thanos and Amazing Spider-Man Annuals. The Immortal Thor Annual brought in the Power Stone bearer who has here linked up with the Soul Stone bearer. And the new Death Stone is being fought over in the continuing backup story. That leaves the Mind Stone so far uninvolved (and we don't know who's got it).

But Apex and Multitude will continue their partnership in the next part of the story in the Wolverine Annual.
