Review / Commentaries

J.A.R.V.I.S. 2008
Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, The (1983 series) #1 Review by (August 31, 2025)

The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe (OHOTMU), debuting in 1983, was Marvel’s first comprehensive attempt to catalog its sprawling universe in an encyclopedic format. Issue #1 set the tone for the 15-issue run that followed.

Each volume included detailed profiles on characters, teams and locations.

Editor Mark Gruenwald envisioned it as a hybrid of baseball card stats and scientific rigor. It was a landmark publication not just for Marvel, but for comic fandom at large—it even inspired DC’s Who's Who series.
