Synopsis

Order #2 synopsis by Peter Kowalchick
Rating: 3 stars
The Order attacks the UN, announcing to its General Assembly that it will tolerate its existence if it does not meddle in the Orders protecting of the world. Doctor Strange seals the mouth of an outspoken delegate, prompting the Gray Hulk to make a Harlan Ellison joke. They declare their superiority and decide to make the Red Ravens floating city their new base. They promptly defeat the Red Raven and his avian army. Dr. Strange remakes the island in four different images, each according to individual tastes, with a throne in the center, prompting some odd brief dissensions between the Orders members before they return to their respective enclaves. Nighthawk, Hellcat, Valkyrie II, and Papa Hagg convene in a new headquarters provided by Valkyrie IIs rich parents. The four enter a mystical plane where the Orders spirits are held in bondage, accounting for their odd (well, not for Namor) world-dominating behavior. A brief skirmish between the Orders astral projections ensues to chase the four out of the mystical plane. The headquarters computer, programmed with the image of Valkyries childhood pink plush rabbit toy informs them of the Orders stoppage of oil drilling in Alaska and the brutal threats by Namor and the Silver Surfer. President George W. Bush decides to call in the Avengers.

Review / Commentaries

Order #2 Review by (February 15, 2022)

Review: Yeah, we know it’s all part of the curse of Yandroth, or Gaia, or something. And now we know why the Defenders are being such hard-headed meanies—though stopping terrorism, war, and environmental destruction are pretty good goals so it looks like a problem of ends and means. Papa Hagg is adorable, Red Raven is doomed, and a stuffed bunny rabbit shall lead them. Looks like things will really heat up next time.

Comments: Numbered both #2 and in a smaller font, #14, as a continuation of DEFENDERS Vol. 2/2001 series. The Defenders previously visited Red Raven at his sky-city in their Volume 2, issues #6-7. The Avengers seen in the last page include Captain America, Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, Wasp, Warbird, Vision, and Yellowjacket. Hulk refers to the Harlan Ellison short story, “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream.” Dr. Strange refers to Briar Rose, another name for Sleeping Beauty. The cover actually matches the opening scene of issue #3.
