Synopsis

Peter Parker: Spider-Man (1993 series) #2 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Story continued from THOR (1998) #8.

Spider-Man and Thor are facing the Dark God Tokkots, who has split himself in two to fight dual heroes. Meanwhile, a sickly Aunt May is searching for Peter at the crowded and chaotic scene, aided by the helpful Officer Barry McCormick; she needs the prescription Peter forgot to give her and she is just realizing that may not have been a smart move on her part….

Spidey shoots a web to stop Thor’s errant hammer and he is yanked away by the momentum as Thor is felled by a blast from the baddies. As Thor recovers and speeds to catch the falling copter, Spidey manages to grab onto a building’s parapet and Mjolnir swings around, wraps the webbing around the twin baddies and it snaps, the hammer hitting the ground. Thor leaps into he air to catch the copter, bringing it down to a soft landing, courtesy of the cushioning webs provided by Spider-Man….

As Officer McCormick sits with Aunt May, Hannah Fairmont recognizes her from the hospital and stops to offer help. Tokkots (times two) realizes that the heroes care for these humans and they burn the ground away around May, Hannah and the cop, leaving them stranded on an island in the middle of the street. Spidey sees this and heads off to help Aunt May and leaps over onto the island as the Tokkots attack. Spidey leaps to engage one enemy in the air while Officer McCormick shoots at the other one, his bullets having little effect. And then Thor, having recovered his hammer in time to prevent his transformation back into Jake Olson, calls down lightning on the baddies. Thor traps his Tokkots in a wind vortex while the other seizes Spidey by the throat and demands Thor surrender and return to Asgard with him or he will crumble Spidey into dust. And then Pete’s pager goes off and the monster cannot bear the sound of it…

[At the Daily Bugle, J. Jonah Jameson is nagging Glory Grant to keep trying to contact Peter Parker.]

…so Spidey seizes the advantage, threatening the villain with the little device before punching his lights out. The two captive Tokkots panic and teleport back to Asgard while Thor vows a reckoning….

Aunt May and the others trapped are rescued and Peter regrets not watching over her. Jake Olson looks at her prescription and assures Peter they can take care of it in the ambulance. Hannah wants to reconcile with Jake. Peter thanks Jake for his efforts and says, “If there is any way I can repay you.…” And Jake responds, “I feel as though you already have….”

Peter Parker: Spider-Man (1993 series) #2 Review by (May 6, 2025)

Review: And here we go! The bad guy battle that started last issue intensifies, engulfing Spidey and Thor! And the stakes are higher as the baddies strike at Aunt May and Hannah Fairmont because each hero needs a hostage of their own. Decent enough story though the resolution is a bit underwhelming: the bad guys are defeated by Pete’s pager, a contrivance tossed into the tale for just such an emergency. On the other hand, the pager was an act of brilliance if you don’t take your comics all that seriously. So…the red pill or the blue one?

Comments: Only appearance of Officer Barry McCormick. Lettering divided up between Richard Starkings, Liz Agraphiotis, and Comicraft
