Savage Hulk #5 Review by (June 29, 2021)

Review: A callback to the Crossroads story arc in TIH #300-309, with Hulk tossed into a gateway to multiple harmless dimensions shows a new instance wherein that apparently went wrong. (Wait for next issue, though.) The story seems more like a Dr. Strange story with Hulk as a guest star than vice versa but I’m not complaining. It’s Strange who is puzzling about how his spell failed, with half the issue being occupied with a battle between Hulk and a giant robot to keep the less attentive readers interested. And Agent Bercerra, SHIELD’s Mystic Arts Expert—who actually knows little about the mystic arts—is a nice character who may return someday; I know I’d like to see her.

Comments: Story follows the events of THE INCREDIBLE HULK #300. These two issues mark the only appearance of SHIELD Agent Becerra. Written by Gabriel Hardman and Corinna Bechko, who also receive brief bios on the recap page.

Savage Hulk #5 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Doctor Strange is before a Congressional hearing, testifying how he sent the increasingly dangerous Hulk into the Crossroads. SHIELD Agent Bercerra, an expert in the mystic arts, questions Strange’s competence in making such a major decision, a question echoed by the Committee members. Suddenly, an insectoid being, the Sorcerer Supreme of his dimension, emerges into the Chamber and accuses Strange as the one who sent the Hulk to them, leading to genocide. He accompanies Master Ebbing though the gateway to meet the Puffball Collective but finds also finds Agent Bercerra has accompanied them. She refuses to go back to Earth, insisting on seeing for herself what Strange has done. They enter the other dimension, a planet called Decopodia, to be greeted by Ebbin’s pupil Korv. Ebbin takes Strange and Bercerra on a flight over their advanced city surrounded by a huge wall. Strange insists he sent Hulk where he would not be a threat to any dimension with sentient life. They watch as a huge armored robot is sent out of the city into the mountains where Hulk attacks it and smashes it to pieces, while the citizens watch via giant telescreens. Strange doesn’t know why Hulk hasn’t triggered the fail-safe spell to return to the Crossroads; Ebbin points out that the Hulk seems to be enjoying this. He also doesn’t see any evidence of genocide; Ebbin weakens and dies, his last words being “Beware my success” which Strange can’t interpret. Strange and Bercerra follow the Hulk into a cave—one strewn with multiple corpses of the locals and Hulk is hungry….
