Synopsis

Silver Surfer: Rebirth #2 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
Last issue:- 1 minute Silver Surfer was chatting with Captain Marvel's son Legacy (Genis-Vell) after they helped some Kree in trouble. Next minute reality changed and he was helping Mar-Vell fight some Skrulls invading a planet. Mar-Vell claimed to have survived the cancer that Norrin Radd *knows* killed him. Then Thanos showed up and killed the Skrulls and Mar-Vell. But he told SS that CM wasn't real.

Now Surfer is confused and angry and attacks Thanos for killing CM. They battle mightily until Thanos wins and asks for his help.

Then reality changes again ...

... and SS finds himself on Thanos' farm on a remote planet. The Titan refuses to continue fighting because he doesn't want his crops damaged. He reminds the Skyrider of how he sought and gained ultimate power (in the Infinity Gauntlet event) only to lose it and the Infinity Gems to Adam Warlock. Warlock distributed the Gems among his Infinity Watch, with Thanos getting the Reality Gem to keep on his remote farm. But now someone has stolen it.

Thanos would dearly like to find out who could do such a thing, and he wants Norrin to help him get it back. Surfer asks why he doesn't involve the Infinity Watch, but the Titanian says he doesn't *trust* Warlock, who once killed him (Marvel Two-In-One Annual #2, but he got better). (I'd guess he also doesn't want Adam to know he lost the Gem.) He *does* trust Surfer to want to help save reality. Norrin admits the truth of the argument.

Then reality changes to a sea of fire, and then changes back again. Thanos says their opponent is learning how to use the Gem. But the realities he creates currently have only a short life.

The Titan tells Surfer he needs his cosmic senses to track the ripples in reality to their source. SS summons his surfboard to carry them but Thanos says he has his own transport. Surfer tenses as the Titan prepares to snap his fingers (such an action caused the death of half the universe in Infinity Gauntlet). But this time the snap just summons his mobile chair/throne. Then they're off. Surfer starts to follow the path but soon senses that the Gem has been used again. And this time it is directed at both of *them*, shattering their personal realities.

Thanos recovers to find himself facing his 'daughter' Nebula with a big gun riding a dinosauroid with 2 fanged mouths, 4 eyes and its brain in a transparent dome.

Silver Surfer awakens in front of his ex-master Galactus demanding another planet to feed off.

And we see the current owner of the Reality Gem continuing to experiment. He warns a minion who stole the Gem for him that he will soon send him to face SS and Thanos, and asks if he is up to it. The minion says he will do anything his master wants. And we see that the minion is Jack Of Hearts.

Silver Surfer: Rebirth #2 Review by (November 11, 2023)
As with last issue we see some inhabitants of temporary realities. This time Nebula and Galactus. But Jack Of Hearts and the unidentified master villain are the real deal.

Ron Marz has been using Jack Of Hearts a lot lately (in the period when this series is set). He hung around with Silver Surfer between his #70 and #82 during which he met and teamed-up with Ganymede of the Sisterhood who was ordained to fight Tyrant (both Ron Marz creations). The pair had there own backup tale in SS Annual #6 (where in the main tale in that issue Marz introduced us to Legacy). And all 3 joined others to take on Tyrant in the Cosmic Powers limited series. But then in the main tale in CP Unlimited #3 the pair were split apart, and now he's here alone.

For those who read those Tyrant apps there are sufficient hints at the end of this issue that the big bad *is* Tyrant. It will be confirmed next issue.
