Synopsis

Tarot #3 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Doctor Strange is missing so the Defenders (Hulk, Sub-Mariner, Valkyrie, Silver Surfer) and the Avengers (Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Scarlet Witch, Vision) take the one clue, the Ichor of Ish’izog, to the Fantastic Four (Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Thing, Human Torch) to see if the FF can uncover any info. Reed analyzes the Ichor and discovers…nothing…literally….

Meanwhile, Dr Strange’s astral form uses the Silver Surfboard to transport his comatose body to Galactus’ ship and the World Devourer wants to know where his herald is….

Back on Earth, Scarlet Witch, Vision, and the Surfer go to Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum where they are admitted by Wong. Wanda consults the Orb of Agamotto to locate Strange and even she is surprised that the Orb obeys her. The Orb bursts open and Mephisto emerges, ready to exact his revenge against the Silver Surfer, first banishing his board and then enwrapping them all in his tentacles….

In Asgard, Thor and Valkyrie arrive at the Rainbow Bridge to be greeted by the Warriors Three. Their plan is to ask the all-seeing Heimdall if he can locate Dr. Strange; instead, Heimdall accuses Thor of being an impostor and attacks him….

At Avengers Mansion, Iron Man sets up a unit to detect the dimensional rift, with Hulk on hand to smash any monsters that may come through. Instead, a trio of wacky racecars burst through, shattering reality….

At the Baxter Building, Daredevil enters carrying the unconscious Spider-Man who has been knocked out by the intensity of his Spider-Sense. The wacky racecars smash through into this reality, pulling with them Hulk, Thor and Valkyrie, Wanda, Vision, and Silver Surfer. Cap loses the container of Ichor, Thor brings the race to a halt in a cartoon land where they face a hero team called the Unbelievables (Mighty Martian, Devil Dawg, Vampire Vixen, Sun Wukong, Sha Wujing). Hulk insults the tiny Devil Dawg, who grows into a huge demon and clobbers him, touching off a battle between the three teams. In the confusion, Val discovers Diablo hiding and he insists he isn’t controlling any of this, handing her his Tarot cards, which she slices in half…

…while Dr. Strange discovers Galactus has never heard of Earth, indicating he has gone back in time. Reality breaks again and the heroes find their identities bizarrely scrambled, making them Doc Surf, Major Gamma, The Hulkoid, Scarlet Strange, Sturm Meister, Reaper, Eiserne Jungfrau, Imperius Hex, Gadget, and Captain Cosmos. Doc Surf uses the Eye of Agamotto to see into Diablo’s mind but there is an interruption: the Unbelievables crash through, intending to save the cosmic order by destroying the heroes….

Review / Commentaries

Tarot #3 Review by (February 26, 2020)

Review: Things were weird already but now they get even weirder. What started as a tale about a villain enslaving two hero teams through mind control has morphed into an alternate reality. Actually, several alternate realities, starting at the end of issue #2 with a slightly different version, then having cartoon characters (altered just enough to avoid lawsuits) run around and then the random blending of heroes that makes the Amalgam Universe just look like lazy doodling. And they’ve only got one issue left to get to a point and snap everything back to normal. And the troubles suffered by Thor, Val, Wanda, Vizh, and SS vanished in a wink; I guess that’s one way to escape from Mephisto. The art is very nice but I’d have to see where this ends up to be able to judge the writing. See you in thirty!

Comments: The racers are a variation on the characters from the 1960s cartoon show WACKY RACES. Mighty Martian somewhat resembles Terrytoons hero Mighty Mouse and Devil Dawg appears to be based on Harvey Comics character Hot Stuff. Sun Wukong and Sha Wujing are characters from the Chinese novel Journey to the West by Wu Cheng-en; Sun has also appeared in 616 continuity as the Monkey King; Sha resembles Chun Li from Street Fighter. Neither my son nor I know who Vampire Vixen is supposed to be; she shares a name but not the appearance of a character from hentai i.e. Japanese porn.
