Ultimate Iron Man II (2008 series) #5 synopsis by reviewer T Vernon
Rating: 4 stars

Howard Stark, Nifara, and Obadiah Stane take a helicopter out to the Utah desert to meet with Loni Stane. Once they disembark, the copter is blown up. Iron Man and War Machine were hidden aboard but Rhodey is injured, severely burned. Tony decides to carry him off to the burn unit at the University of Utah. Obadiah mocks Tony and Rhodey so Nifara tries to push him off a cliff. Howard jumps forward to grab him, Nifara refuses to help, his clothing tears and he falls…to be caught by Iron Man. Soldiers appear to take them prisoner but Iron Man flies off. He tells Nifara that Rhodey was not seriously injured and Si Ma had a copter hidden away and she is taking him to the hospital. Back up copters fire on the stronghold but Tony reasons that Loni must want him to find the back door….

Obadiah is reunited with his mother, trying to confirm that she would not have let him be harmed but she is evasive. Iron Man finds the hidden door and enters, Howard warning him over the radio to be careful. He falls down a shaft full of gas but he recovers quickly and crashes out; Loni runs off to escape the gas, leaving Obadiah behind. Tony rescues him and they try another door but this is also a death trap so he orders Obadiah to stay out of the way….

Loni has Howard and Nifara tied up and guarded. She decides there must be no witnesses so she calmly executes Nifara and her own two guards. Howard tries to tackle her but she gets him helpless on the floor, telling him he will be her means of getting Tony to remove the Iron Man armor. Loni then monologues for an entire page, explaining her schemes from the beginning. And then Iron Man arrives, so Loni shoots Howard and tells Tony that Howard has a half hour to live and she will have her medical team attend to him if he takes off the armor. Knowing his troops are searching the complex, Tony removes the armor and she shoots him in the head. She kisses Howard goodbye as she is about to execute him but Tony punches her out, explaining that his brain is spread throughout his body so a head injury is not necessarily fatal. Tony tends to his father and then Obadiah walks in, notes that nobody tries to kill him and gets away with it and calmly shoots his mother. As they greet the arriving army, Obadiah notes that he is now an orphan, free at last….

Comments: This world is designated Earth-55921. Virtual Calligraphy contributed to the lettering.

Review: It all wraps up in a mostly satisfying manner, with Iron Man showing up again, having not been seen since issues #1-2 (a total of three issues over the ten-issues of the two miniseries). Really, this miniseries should have been titled ULTIMATE TONY STARK, since Iron Man was a comparatively small part of his life. So there’s a James Bond-style assault on the villain’s stronghold with death traps and a monologuing bad guy, with the army showing up a tad late to save the day. Okay wrap up to it all. Loni Stane is the Big Bad, going back to the first miniseries, pulling strings behind the scenes for the first four issues here when she wasn’t suspected. And Obadiah is still a little rotter. So why does he get the final line?

Bitter Moment: Nifara’s senseless death. Her contribution to the team was a little spotty though she came off like the Hermione to Tony and Rhodey’s Harry and Ron, contributing some serious thought in issue #4. But her sudden execution smacks too much of Women in Refrigerators. Even though Rhodey has yet to find out about it and Tony doesn’t react much. Howard is the one most affected and tries to comfort Tony.
