Story Name:

Welcome to Genosha ...A Green and Pleasant Land...

Synopsis

Uncanny X-Men, The (1981 series) #235 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

On the island nation of Genosha, a mutant man runs with his infant son, fleeing the magistrates chasing them. He makes it to the airport and hides his son in the cargo hold of a plane, and has an emotional farewell with his child. The mutant man then runs off in order to distract the magistrates. They fire a warning shot, and he’s able to demolish one of the pursuing trucks when they get too close. Soon enough however, the mutant is gunned down and as he dies, he watches the plane carrying his son take off, content in the fact that they’re both now free! Two days later, another group of Genoshan operatives see the news of the discovered child as they wait for their quarry to make her way to them. Soon enough, a plane lands piloted by Madelyne Pryor, a favor to her passenger Jenny Ransome. The Genoshan operatives called in a fake medical emergency to lure the nurse Ransome out here and grab her in order to take her back home to Genosha. Madelyne is able to get a brief mayday call out before her plane is destroyed by one of the operatives named Punchout. Ransome argues that she’s a naturalized Australian citizen, but they argue that she’s needed by her country for her duty as a natural born Genoshan citizen! Another of the operatives, Pipeline, then digitizes Ransome and sends her to Genosha via a phone line, before doing the same to Madelyne!

Some time later, Rogue flies in to investigate where Madelyne disappeared from. She discovers the wrecked plane and Psylocke transmits her coordinates to Gateway so that he can teleport Storm and Wolverine there. Wolverine uses his senses to try and figure out what happened and where they went. Back in their base, the rest of the X-Men use their sophisticated technology to get a fix on a radar contact not too far away that could be the ones they’re looking for. Gateway then teleports the rest of the X-Men there so that they can fan out. Later on, Wolverine and Rogue track the scents to a hospital and sneak in with the appropriate disguises. They quickly find Punchout and Wolverine attacks her, knowing she’s one of the ones they’re looking for. She retaliates and Rogue catches her fist, absorbing her power and knocking her out. Wolverine then confronts the others, and Pipeline transmits one of their magistrates there to help. The magistrate fires a massive energy weapon that blows Wolverine and Rogue clear out of the building, before Pipeline transmits a whole squad of reinforcements there!

The rest of the X-Men quickly run into the reinforcements, having lost contact with Wolverine and Rogue. While Colossus, Dazzler, and Longshot deal with half of the squad the direct way, Storm generates a fog to blind the rest. She then sends Psylocke and Havok to try and draw the rest away from the hospital, and watches as the battle rages on, trying to figure out just who they’re up against. As the battle rages on, the first group ends up attracting the attention of nearby civilians. The magistrates throw some grenades at the X-Men, clearly not caring who they hurt, and Colossus takes the brunt of the explosives while Longshot takes out the magistrates. Realizing how despicable their enemies truly are, the X-Men renew the battle with even more fervor! Meanwhile, Hawkshaw, Pipeline, and Punchout discover the unconscious Rogue and Wolverine and Pipeline uses his powers to transmit them to Genosha for examination. Later, once the battle is finished, the local police find the magistrates tied up and left for them by, as far as they know, an unknown group. The magistrates are less than forthcoming, but the police discover that the baby found on the plane is missing! The police then tell the magistrates that whoever caught them better give their bosses everything they deserve! To be continued!

Uncanny X-Men, The (1981 series) #235 Review by (April 22, 2026)

Review: An important location in X-Men is introduced this issue with the first glimpses and mentions of Genosha! We don’t learn too much about it, or even see that much of it, but we’re sprinkled just enough context to know they’re up to something nasty! The details will be filled in in the upcoming issues, showcasing some of the worst treatment of mutants we’ve seen so far. This issue mostly deals with the X-Men coming up against some operatives from Genosha after Madelyne goes missing when they attempted recapture a Gensohan citizen who had defected. There’s some cool action, and plenty of examples showing that their enemies don’t care who they hurt in their pursuits, foreshadowing just how despicable they really are. Just like the last issue he drew however, I found Rick Leonardi’s art to be distractingly cluttered. Still a very good first issue to this storyline, with the perfect amount of intrigue. Gensoha will have quite the up and down history in X-Men lore, and that all starts here!

Comments: First glimpse and mentions of Genosha.
