Synopsis

Uncanny X-Men, The (1981 series) #541 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

San Francisco Mayor Sadie Sinclair is drafting a public statement about the Juggernaut crisis (actually Juggernaut, possessed by Kuurth, Breaker of Stone crisis) when Scott “Cyclops” Summers finally returns her call to explain what the X-Men are doing. Emma Frost draws the Mayor into a psychic conference room where Scott explains who Juggernaut is, now enhanced by the magic hammer, and their usual means of defeating him, psychic attacks once they remove his protective helmet. Sinclair is concerned about collateral damage among Kuurth’s newly gathered followers. Emma exerts some mental pressure via Cerebra, causing Kuurth’s followers to desert him. Kuurth reacts with a shock wave destroying a fleet of police cars as his herald announces that mind control is one of the greatest sins and Juggernaut will kill his followers rather than let that continue….

Cyclops takes Cecilia Reyes out to the I-580, telling her to use her force field to keep the mob following Juggy safe. Cyclops tells Juggernaut they are here to stop him, pausing to punch out the herald. Cyclops unleashes a blast at Kuurth as a distraction; Kitty Pryde brings Colossus up from beneath the ground to grab Juggy from behind but he is tossed off. Iceman freezes Juggy’s helmet but he is repulsed. Colossus throws a punch and is punched back, hurling him away—but there is now a crack in his helmet. Not enough for psychic penetration. Magneto confronts Juggy who hurls the hammer at him; Magneto is shocked that his metal influencing powers have no effect on the hammer; Kitty Pryde must come to his rescue….

In the psychic conference room, Emma mocks the X-Men’s efforts so far. Scott assures the Mayor they have over 100 mutants on call. The Mayor asks why they aren’t employing them; Scott responds that half of them are children but the real problem is that if they go in en masse, they would only be killing their own and so far Juggernaut hasn’t killed anyone. So he moves on to Plan 2, not Plan B which implies they have only 26 plans. So Cyclops issues orders through Emma….

As the backup team attacks Juggernaut, Hope Summers is called in. She absorbs the powers of multiple mutants and assaults Juggernaut, quickly tearing his helmet off before he knocks her out. Emma Frost unleashes a psychic attack on Juggy—and her brain is fried. The herald enters the psychic conference room where he tells them they cannot stop the Juggernaut. He tells Sinclair that she can only save her city by driving out or killing the mutants. He tells Scott that he can only save his people by taking them out of the city and allowing Juggernaut to destroy the human population. Then Juggy’s giant foot clomps down upon them, ejecting them from the conference room. Kuurth continues toward the city while Emma is in mental shock….
