Chaos at the UN

Synopsis

Warlock and the Infinity Watch #28 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
In #26 a mysterious woman arrived on Monster Island but was immediately caught up in the Infinity Watch (Adam Warlock, Drax The Destroyer, Gamora, Moondragon, Pip The Troll and their ally Maxam) & Avengers (Captain America, Black Widow, Giant-Man, Hercules, Thunderstrike and Vision) battle and knocked out by Herc. She's been unconscious since then but now that the 2 teams realise that their conflict was orchestrated by villainous Senator Munson they have time to make sure she's alright. The Watch have made her comfortable on a bed and now Pip The Troll investigates the bottle of alcohol she brought with her. He's about to try some of it when Gamora grabs it off him because it might be poison. Moondragon says she's already scanned it and it's not toxic.

But Pip still doesn't get to drink any of it because Adam, Cap and Vision return from a strategy discussion to say that only they 3 will go confront the foe at the UN. Pip will teleport them there with his Space Gem and then come right back. Warlock suspects he knows who Munson really is.

At the UN Senator Kyle Munson is going to address the General Assembly. Some of the delegates summarise what's been going on for us. Munson has been warning them about the threat of Warlock and the Watch since at least #14. On the 1 hand they know that the Watch helped sort out the Infinity Crusade. But on the other hand they're in league with the Mole Man who's given them an island to live on. Munson has been trying to get the UN to seize the island to deny the subterranean villain a surface base of operations. The Senator now tells them that yesterday the Avengers went to Monster Island to evict the occupants. They met the Infinity Watch in battle but since then they've been out of contact. He can only assume that the Watch has killed them. He bows his head as he reads the list of names of the missing.

But then Captain America, Vision and Warlock appear before them. Adam takes over the podium to address the confused Assembly. He confirms that he is head of the IW and they have made an alliance with the subterranean monarch Mole Man who has given them Monster Isle as a base. He demands that they stop trying to evict them from their island (#14, #22 and the current 3-parter). He further asserts that Mole Man has given up invading the surface world and only wishes to protect his own kingdom. As such Adam demands that the UN officially recognise Mole Man's domain as an independent nation. And he states that as MM's ally the Watch will help him defend against any incursion.

The delegates don't like being threatened and Munson orders Cap and Vizh to arrest Warlock. But Cap tells him that the Avengers side with Mole Man and the Watch on this, and they refuse to obey his orders. And Warlock says that the being before them is *not* Munson, who is probably dead. And he causes the foe to reveal himself as his old foe the Man-Beast who now launches a direct attack on him. His bodyguard Ralph Shaw also drops his disguise and attacks Cap as MB's minion Triax. Cap falls but Vision hurls Triax through a wall. The synthezoid then tries to help Warlock but the Man-Beast severely affects him with a blast. Triax has recovered and now the 2 villains join forces against Adam. There follows several pages of fighting mostly against Triax until a karmic blast him takes out.

Meanwhile Count Abyss is wondering what progress his agent Maya is doing in getting hold of Adam's Soul Gem. He's disconcerted to discover via his viewing crystal that Warlock is fighting a giant warthog (for that is what Triax was evolved from) rather than succumbing to Maya's feminine wiles. And when he directs the crystal to show him the female he's angry to see her asleep and shouts at her to wake up and get on with it.

Now there's more pages of fighting, this time Warlock and Man-Beast 1-on-1. MB claims the High Evolutionary created him to be Adam's opposite (despite the fact that happened before AW was created by someones else). Eventually our hero gets the villain at his mercy and Cap has to stop him from killing him. The Avengers will take the villainous duo to the Vault prison for superchars. Warlock repeats his veiled threats to the UN and calls the Pip teleport taxi service to take him home.

He updates the Watch on the satisfactory outcome and then discovers that Maya is awake and waiting for him with her flask of booze.

Review / Commentaries

Warlock and the Infinity Watch #28 Review by (August 5, 2023)
The High Evolutionary evolved the Man-Beast from a wolf to be 1 of his New Men/Knights Of Wundagore in Thor #134-135. Then when HE created Counter-Earth MB became its 'Satan' and HE sent Adam Warlock (re-christened from Him who had been created by the scientists of the Enclave in Fantastic Four 66-67) to be its saviour (Marvel Premiere #1-2, the 1st Warlock run and Hulk #176-178). During that period MB disguised himself as a CE politician. After taking on the guise of Hate-Monger on Earth in Spectacular Spider-Man #12-15 MB tried to return to Counter-Earth in Thor#316-317.

Counter-Earth was taken away by the Beyonders and then destroyed by Thanos during the Infinity Gauntlet event. But MB saved a few of its inhabitants and blamed HE for their troubles. AW got drawn into that conflict in our #3-6.

Man-Beast mentions that Warlock stole a world he ruled and made him a galactic fugitive. (An editorial comment connects the 2nd bit to #6, but the 1st bit presumably refers to the original CE storyline.)

Triax worked for MB in the original Warlock series and our #3-6.

This is the end for Triax.
But Man-Beast will immediately escape custody to appear as Karnivore in Thor #473-475, and then be back as Lord Anon to be the main villain for the Quicksilver series with HE and the Knights Of Wundagore. At that point he's completely written out (so far).

Thunderstrike will have #4-9 of his own series (with a side trip to Iron Man #303-304) before rejoining the Avengers in their #374.
But the other Avengers will go immediately to their #370.

The Count Abyss/Maya plot will at last take centre-stage next issue.
