Synopsis

Winter Soldier: The Bitter March #3 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

On a speeding train, SHIELD Agent Ran Shen is locked in combat with the Winter Soldier when Hydra Agent Shocky Dan enters the compartment. The interloper blasts Winter Soldier as Peter and Mila Hitzig flee. Ran Shen then takes on Dan but finds him a tough customer—until he sprays a caustic chemical in the bad guy’s face. By this time Winter Soldier has recovered and he fires three bullets into Ran’s chest at point blank range; Ran releases a smoke bomb and crawls out the room. The assassin follows the trail of blood down the corridor but Ran ambushes him using Shocky Dan’s electric gauntlets. Winter Soldier is too fast for him and Ran is again at his mercy, when Bucky recalls Captain America telling him not to murder a defeated for, and he leaves.

Meanwhile, Mila Hitzig discovers that her husband has cut a deal with Hydra. They enter the dining car to discover that The Drain has manipulated everyone in the car to kill themselves. No longer needing him, The Drain hypnotizes Peter into shooting himself.

In the Soviet Union, Winter Soldier’s handlers, realizing his Bucky memories are returning, order him to abort the mission but he refuses, insisting he is all right….

A critically injured Ran Shen makes it to a hypo in his luggage…

The Drain dons a jet pack, ordering his henchmen to remain in the train while the bomb they have planted ticks down to the countdown. The Winter Soldier arrives and starts shooting; he grapples with Drain and the two go flying out of the train into a massive chasm below. Ran Shen enters using a metal ladder with Shocky Dan’s gauntlets to take down the other Hydra agents. In midair, The Drain uses his powers of persuasion to remind Winter Soldier of who he once was—and how he has sullied the legacy of Captain America, ordering the assassin to kill himself….

Ran and Mila Hitzig race to the engine to warn them of the bomb but they are too late: it detonates, sending the train off the high trestle in flames….

Review / Commentaries

Winter Soldier: The Bitter March #3 Review by (April 23, 2014)
Review: All-action issue is pretty much a comic book version of FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, but there are worse films to imitate. Thrills, chills, and spills are the order of the day and The Drain gets creepier by the page. Very well-done issue; can’t wait to see what’s next.

Comments: The Hydra agent with electric hands gets a name this issue: Shocky Dan (like that’s better than Paste-Pot Pete?)
