When USAgent was trapped in the underground lab of Curtiss Jackson, the Power Broker, suddenly everything froze; Tath Ki drew him out of the time stream to recruit him with four other incarnations of Captain America for the mission to save Steve Rogers in an alternate 21st century America ruled by a patriotic elite. The team has just returned from the first shocking foray into the alternate world. Commander A outlines the events that created that darker world: the Avengers never found Captain America floating in the ice, so when they returned to New York and came under alien attack, they were rescued by two new female heroes Broad-Stripe and Bright Star. The two were invited to join the team and the strong personality of Broad-Stripe came to dominate the group: when Thor wished to leave the team, Broad-Stripe advised the others to honor his decision. She supplied the weaponry which enabled the Avengers to kill Kang; when Hawkeye took Jarvis captive, it was Broad-Stripe who had him jailed. The Avengers disbanded and Broad-Stripe and Bright Star formed the Americommand, with Major America, Americop, and Ameridroid. This new team tracked down the fugitive Baron Zemo, was prepared when the Sleepers awoke, and captured the Red Skull as soon as he emerged from suspended animation. They then proceeded to defeat Captain Mar-Vell and round up and imprison all the mutants, before seizing control of the United States through their support of Presidential candidate Miles Brickman. Why didn’t the other heroes stop them? The three male members of the Fantastic Four were gone, lost in the Negative Zone, Hank Pym was hospitalized after a nervous breakdown, Janet Van Dyne had retired as Wasp to become a socialite, Tony Stark had died during a heart transplant. And all of these events look like they were engineered by the Americommand. So…to action. Bucky is chosen as leader; he and Steve will check on Hank Pym, Commander A and American Dream will question Wasp, and USAgent will accompany Tath Ki to learn the truth behind Tony Stark’s death. They teleport back to the alternate reality….
In a cemetery on Long Island, Tath Ki and USAgent enter the Stark family crypt and learn that Tony’s body is there but the brain is missing….
Aboard a yacht off the coast of Monaco, Commander A and American Dream disguise themselves as fans and approach a vacationing Janet Van Dyne. Sue Richards spies them and suspects them of being paparazzi. They drop their holographic disguises but Sue, who had been warned of this eventuality, uses her force field to push the two heroes overboard….
At the Leonard Samson Memorial Psychiatric Hospital in Ohio, the two Caps enter disguised as staff members. They locate a drugged Hank Pym, constantly mumbling over an ant farm, and decide to break him out….
Tath Ki and USAgent are caught by guards at the cemetery, the mystic teleports them back to safety. At the same time he brings back the other team members, coincidentally rescuing them from harm. In Tath Ki’s abode, they compare notes and recognize that Broad-Stripe is actually Deirdre Wentworth, better known as Cap’s enemy Superia…..
At the headquarters of Americommand, Broad-Stripe gives orders that the "impostors" be apprehended, with care taken that "Steve Rogers" be taken alive and unharmed. When the others question this course of action, she strikes back violently, silencing the dissent and threatening to have them replaced. In her secret office she meets with the preserved brain of Tony Stark which she keeps alive as a captive audience while tapping its knowledge. She then unveils her greatest secret: the source of power for her time-probes, a glowing tesseract—which in another world was known as the Cosmic Cube….
