Avengers #253 Review by (May 26, 2023)
Comments: Cover title: The Mighty Avengers, on issues #241-255. Part two of three parts. Quasimodo was introduced in FANTASTIC FOUR ANNUAL #4 and had most recently appeared in ROM #42-45; he is next seen in IRON MAN ANNUAL #12. Around this period, Tony Stark was fighting an out-of-control Jim Rhodes Iron Man; he is back with the West Coast Avengers in IRON MAN #193. The Blood Brothers return in QUASAR #12. The letters page has one from future fantasy writer W.D. Kilpack.

Review: And so, Vision takes over the world in a very exciting issue. The art team, penciller, inker, and colorist, have come up with a method of portraying holograms on paper which gives a cool look to the inner workings of the Matrix. And Quasi was an interesting choice for an interim villain. And we see the inception through the eyes of Dane Whitman, whose appearance was unexpected as he did not call ahead. And the end is nicely set up for the conclusion to the story arc and Vision’s grand scheme which was shorter-lived than most.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Avengers #253 Synopsis by T Vernon
Off the Pacific Coast, Mockingbird drops from a Quinjet onto a drug runners’ speedboat, batters the baddies, holds them until the Coast Guard arrives, swoops up to the Jet again and heads to West Coast Avengers compound where Hawkeye is ready to start the team meeting.  When Tigra and Wonder Man (in a new costume) are there, only Iron Man is missing….

At Thanos’ secret desert base in Arizona, Scarlet Witch uses her hex power to move a damaged door aside for the Army engineers and Starfox identifies a symbio-nullifier and carries it back (8.5 tons) to the lab. Colonel Farnam tells Captain America he has been ordered by the Pentagon to vacate the base as too dangerous for the Army to explore. Hercules shows up in a new outfit cobbled together by Supply. The two Blood Brothers are chained down and kept at far points of the building as they draw strength from their proximity. When Starfox and Wanda arrive with the nullifier, Herc puts the Brothers inside and they are rendered powerless….

At Avengers Mansion, Dane Whitman is being held captive in a tube, watching the Avengers’ actions on a screen. A giant hologram Vision explains his plan to make the world safe by running it himself. Vision checks on his body, immobile in the Encephalatron Command Chair while ISAAC nags him into getting things started; And so he does, his consciousness moving through the world’s computer systems, from the Pentagon to NORAD to the Helicarrier to Omnivac in space to the Soviet Union to the entire world. But then he detects another consciousness in the network: Quasimodo, trapped in the Soviet network and begging for release. Knowing of the mad machine’s evil, Vision refuses to help so Quasimodo attacks him within the network….

Progress report: Captain Marvel streaks through the solar system, passing Uranus on her way to Thanos’ starship….

Meanwhile, Dane takes advantage of Vision’s absence by testing his psychic bond with the Ebony Blade; intense concentration enables him to draw the sword from his luggage and to his hand, allowing him to crash his way out of the glass tube and don his Black Knight armor….

Vision and Quasimodo fight in the network, which damage is mirrored in real time in the Soviet computer system. Finally, Vision is able to expel his foe from the system….

In Arizona, Cap receives a radio message from Hawkeye looking for Iron Man. A brief chat reveals that Vision had lied about the West Coast team being occupied on a mission. They head to the Quinjet and race back to New York. Cap and Wanda contact Vision who reveals what he has done. He assures them all is for the best and that he still loves Wanda. Cap and Wanda decide he must be stopped….
