Black Panther and the Agents Of Wakanda #3 Review by (November 30, 2019)

The title is a play on the X-Men's graphic novel God Loves, Man Kills - which was used as the basis for the X2 film.

John Jameson is the son of J Jonah Jameson. He was a NASA astronaut, and a big reason that JJJ hates Spider-Man is that in Amazing SM#1 Spidey rescued John from a plummeting space capsule thus stealing his thunder. Later in his career (ASM#124) he found a gemstone on the Moon which made him turn into the Man-Wolf on full Moons. Presumably that side of him will come to the fore in Part 2 next issue.

Mockingbird has had an extensive career working with SHIELD and on many Avengers teams but possibly her hardest job was being married to Hawkeye (Clint Barton). Lately she's been working with Wasp (Nadia Van Dyne)'s GIRL team and in the Daughters Of Liberty in the current Captain America series.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Black Panther and the Agents Of Wakanda #3 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
Last issue ended with Black Panther getting a message from Broo that the Moon is hungry.

But we start with a flashback to the Avengers: No Surrender story arc when the Earth was stolen by Elders Of The Universe Challenger and Grandmaster as a site for a game. At the same time the Moon disappeared elsewhere. We now learn that another Elder the Gardener found it. This was during his period of madness in All-New Guardians Of The Galaxy, and as part of that madness we see that he planted something beneath the surface. Planet and moon were then reinstated in their proper places at the end of No Surrender.

3 hours before the message Broo and Gorilla-Man were in space testing an upgraded detection array on a satellite when they picked up an anomaly on the Moon and went to investigate.

Now Agent John Jameson (Man-Wolf) welcomes Mockingbird (Bobbi Morse) to the Wakandan helicarrier base of the Agents Of Wakanda. She's been invited to join the team by its Director Okoye but doesn't yet know if it's right for her. Then T'Challa calls John up and says they have a mission that needs his astronaut experience, and Bobbi can come too. They suit up and join Panther and Okoye. BP tells them about Broo and GM investigating something on the Moon, and "the Moon is hungry" was their last transmission 9 minutes ago before losing contact. The other Avengers are busy and the Alpha Flight station is on the far side of the Earth so the Agents are taking the job.

They launch in Wakandan space craft Spearpoint-02. Mocky asks what happened to -01 and is reassured that Broo and G-Man flew it to the satellite and then the Moon. But then T'Challa tells her that the 17 prototypes all blew up. However they do reach the Moon safely very quickly and land where the last transmission came from. However there's no sign of the Agents or their craft. Mockingbird notices that there aren't even any footprints, and then that *they* aren't leaving footprints either.

She stoops to examine the Moondust and declares it strangely organic. And then green tentacles erupt from the ground and start to drag them and their spaceship down. As the other 3 fight back Panther goes with the flow and penetrates deeper underground seeking the root of this vegetable monster. His special BP suit repels large spores that try to get to him. And then he finds something.

Meanwhile we see Broo being pampered by adoring X-females in awe of his genius. And Gorilla-Man winning a drinking contest hosted by Howard The Duck with an audience of other animal-themed Marvel chars. But in reality T'Challa has just located them floating in their helmet-less spacesuits in a tank of liquid. Avoiding more tentacles he comes across the Spearpoint-01. A password gets him in but he finds that the vegetation has invaded and is draining the craft's energy. He tells the ship to power down, and the tentacles don't like that. He authorises the vessel to self-destruct then exits quickly. The explosion throws him to the surface.

That has really woken the plant-thing up. And our view pulls back to see glowing eyes and mouth etched into the Moon's surface. This is now a living planetoid.

Mockingbird has survived her tentacular encounter. But she discovers John and Okoye also now floating in liquid.
