Synopsis

Black Widow (1999 series) #3 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

Having killed Black Widow Natasha Romanoff in Zurich, the SHIELD team quietly leaves; Daredevil calls her at this moment and the rival Black Widow, Yelena Belova, answers Nat's phone. Belova explains that Natasha is dead (kicking her body into the lake) and DD gives her the intel: US and Russian military forces have been dispatched to Rhapastan to prevent the use of the bio-toxin and Black Widow must get there first to protect the soldiers from the toxin....

At his lab in Zurich, Dr Ines receives a call asking him if he has discovered an antidote for the bio-toxin. No, but he has created a vaccine. His mystery caller tells him to send the vaccine to Colonel Khan in Rhapastan and then go into hiding....

At the army base, Belova sets off explosions and then hijacks a truck for her escape but she is captured by Colonel Khan himself. He mocks her efforts to prevent his using the toxin on his enemies—he was planning to use it on his own troops, killing them but creating a horrifying reputation for himself and his army. She is tied up and left under guard in a tent....

Meanwhile, a nurse (face covered by a niqab but we know it is Natasha) has come to treat the unit's burn victims; the Colonel orders all the men to report to her for a vaccine against burn-related infections. When Belova escapes, Natasha drops her disguise and hurries after her, restraining her to a) explain that she faked her death with some friends in stolen SHIELD uniforms and rubber bullets just to get away from her shadow and b) let Belova provide a distraction while she carried out her plan—which includes vaccinating her rival. Russian military forces arrive and Colonel Khan orders the bio-toxin released. But Natasha had inoculated the troops against it; only Khan himself was not treated. He turns into a superstrong madman and goes after the Russians; Natasha engages him until the serum finally kills him. Belova tries to kill her rival but Natasha knows that Belova looks forward to meeting and defeating her enemy in the future. Natasha allows Belova to make her escape while reporting to the Americans the outcome of the mission.
