Black Widow #2 Review by (March 26, 2024)

Review: Part two starts by raising more questions about this woman murdered in Alabama who was a former Black Widow, as the plot becomes a bit clearer and Nat knows what she may be dealing with. There’s an exciting gun battle though the climactic wounding of Natasha is a bit of a fake out as nothing comes of it. The North Institute operatives, Max Hunter and Kestrel are intriguing, especially with their ties to the US government, but not much comes of them.

Comments: Rated PSR+ (Parental Supervision Recommended Plus). This issue’s cover provides Black Widow’s headshot in the Marvel Heroes Library.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Black Widow #2 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

In Alabama, Natasha Romanova, the retired Black Widow, and her partner, private eye Phil Dexter attend the funeral of the women’s activist killed at a protest. There is a military man in uniform at the graveside; Natasha tells Phil to follow him while Nat, pretending to be a friend of the deceased, talks to another attendee….

Later, they compare notes. Natasha has learned that Stacy Matheson/Stefanya Melnikova was three months pregnant while Phil has discovered the military guy is Sgt. William Forester, Special Ops….

That night, Nat and Phil break into Stacy’s apartment and discover a secret compartment containing a large cache of money (some of which Phil takes) and a letter from her Soviet handler asking her to return to the USSR, which she clearly ignored. In her bathroom they find painkillers and a drug called Medusagen. Nat contacts Sgt. Forester and imitates Stacy’s voice, asking him to come to her house….

In New Mexico, the North Institute operatives, Max Hunter and Kestrel are on the trail of Natasha and Phil. They get a call informing them of the situation in Alabama and give orders to deal with Forester and anyone else he may have spoken to….

Forster arrives at Stacy’s home and is captured by Natasha and Phil. He explains he is the father of Stacy’s child and he bought her the painkillers but doesn’t know what Medusagen is. ATF Agents then open fire on the house, killing Forester. Nat and Phil escape through the back, fight some agents in the woods and make it to the getaway car. And then they discover that Nat has been shot in the abdomen….
