In Berlin, Captain America on a motorcycle and Sharon Carter
in a SHIELD vehicle are pursuing a terrorist plotting to blow up the opera
house with a car bomb. As Cap is about to catch the villain, he finds himself
teleported to the Rainbow Bridge in Asgard, wrecking his cycle. Learning from
the Lady Sif how precise the device is, he persuades her to do him a favor.
Back in Berlin, the villain rides up a flight of steps, jumping the car through
the air at the opera house’s glass façade—and suddenly the car is gone and the
bad guy faceplants against the windows. Sif tells Cap that she sent the car
bomb to the moon. [NASA scientists are perplexed that a lunar vehicle has
gotten into an auto accident on the moon.]
Cap encounters Volstagg, who invites him to a feast, though
Volstagg has already started…and finished…without him. Volstagg needs a favor
that he cannot ask of his fellow Asgardians. He used the Bridge to visit a
world called Trigon at the farthest end of the Ten Realms. He discovered the
peaceful Trigonians had been invaded by the warlike Krah and after a year of
war, the Trigonians had prayed for a warrior to save them. It was then that
Volstagg arrived and met Queen Silvi and was smitten so he proceeded to visit
from time to time to lead their army against the invaders. He welcomes it
because then he can be who he truly is. Cap asks what he means and Volstagg
explains that every team needs a funny member and his history with the Warriors
Three soon pushed him into that role so he has since pretended to be the
bumbler and clown, using it to his and the team’s advantage. But now the Krah
have returned to Trigon and he needs help; he would keep this a secret from
Thor and the others besides, the Krah are now familiar with Volstagg’s
strategies and he needs someone new. Cap agrees to help him…but Volstagg has
one more favor to ask….
The situation is dire on Trigon when Volstagg and an armored
Captain America appear, thrilling the Queen who is in love with the hero.
Volstagg and Cap lead the Troginans into battle, routing the enemy once and for
all. And then comes the favor Volstagg asked of Cap—how he must relate how
Volstagg died heroically in the final push, ensuing the Krah will never return….
As Cap and Volstagg return to Asgard, Cap asks why Volstagg
speaks differently than usual. Volstagg explains how Thor and the others
learned their English from Chaucer but he from Benjamin Franklin when he
visited Midgard, leaving him with directions for an experiment with a kite and
a key. They are met by Thor, Hogun, and Fandral who have been seeking him to
join in a battle. They do not recognize Cap in his armor and Volstagg rides off
with them. Cap returns to Sif and finds she has repaired his motorcycle and
made some improvements. He asks if she can see whether Queen Silvi is alright;
she sees that she still mourns her hero. Cap takes his leave….
