Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #232 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 5 stars

In Nicaragua, the U.S. government sic’s their dangerous operative Nuke on a small outpost. He fires napalm and bullets, mercilessly cutting through everyone in his path, killing dozens of people! Once the chaos is done, Nuke’s colonel tells him his new mission will send him back to America and straight to New York, an order right from the general! In New York, said general informs the Kingpin that Nuke is headed his way as requested, as Fisk looks forward to aiming his new weapon right at Matt Murdock! In an abandoned flat in Hell’s Kitchen, Matt Murdock and Karen Page are reunited once more, as Matt holds her through her pain and withdrawal symptoms. She thinks of everything that got them to this point, and everything that her desperate, selfish actions made him lose. And yet, when she told him what she’d done, he reassured her that he hadn’t lost a thing. Not a thing. Instead, he kissed her, and held her, and helped her rest, and she takes solace in the fact that no matter what else she told them, she never told them what kind of man he truly is.

Meanwhile, Ben Urich tracks down Foggy in order to ask him about Matt. Foggy admits that he doesn’t know where Matt is but that he’s preparing an appeal for when Matt’s charges can be overturned. While both still worry for Matt, Foggy drops his appeal documents, and Ben takes an interest in some of Glori’s photos that spill out, telling Foggy to have her call him. As Nuke takes a flight to America, Fisk has a video meeting with the police commissioner. The commissioner informs Fisk that Lois, the nurse who tried to kill Urich’s wife last issue, is planning to turn state’s evidence against him, and that Urich landed an interview with her. Fisk orders that a certain officer be present at the interview and reminds the commissioner of the scandalous photos he’s blackmailing him with, to ensure his continued cooperation. Sometime later, Glori calls Foggy and tells him that Ben got her a job at the Daily Bugle, while Foggy admits that he isn’t sure the new firm he works for is entirely legitimate. In Hell’s Kitchen, Matt heads to the small job he acquired, and Karen ponders that Matt seems different somehow, like he’s waiting for something…

At the city jail, Ben and Glori head for the meeting with Lois, escorted by his police officer bodyguard, Hegerfors, and an associate of the prison, Blanders. Fisk’s planted officer, Coogan, lets them into the cell and before anything can happen, he and Blanders both pull their guns! Blanders shoots and kills Lois, while Coogan and Hegerfors end up shooting each other, while Glori gets photos of the whole thing! Urich tackles Blanders and uses a discarded gun to beat him to death, leaving Ben and Glori in a room full of bodies! Elsewhere, Nuke is brought before the Kingpin, who expertly appeals to his exaggerated sense of patriotism in order to manipulate him! Fisk convinces Nuke that he’s a determined patriot like him, and that Daredevil is an enemy of America, looking to overthrow everything he’s built!

Back in Hell’s Kitchen, Matt is just finishing up his shift at his new job as a line cook at a diner, when he hears Ben and Glori come in. Ben is still stunned that he killed a man, even if it was self-defense, and is hoping to locate Matt in Hell’s Kitchen. Matt then hears a helicopter overhead and Nuke is dropped on Hell’s Kitchen, all part of Fisk’s plan to draw him out once more! Nuke opens fire in the streets of Hell’s Kitchen, firing bullets and rockets alike, causing untold property damage and killing countless people! Matt runs through the carnage back to the now destroyed flat to find Karen in the rubble, injured but alive. She reveals she kept his Daredevil costume safe and he finally dons it again, knowing that Fisk has finally made his move. Nuke continues his assault until he’s struck by a well-known billy club, and Daredevil makes his full public return as the fires blaze behind him, ready to finish things once and for all! To be concluded!

Daredevil (1964 series) #232 Review by (April 29, 2026)

Review: The penultimate chapter of Born Again introduces a new villain in the form of Nuke, as the Kingpin uses him to draw Daredevil out! This also feels a good time to talk about one of this story’s most common criticisms. Though pretty universally beloved, some have criticized this story for how Karen Page is used, essentially just a drug addict damsel used to betray Matt and then run to him to save her. It’s a pretty valid criticism, considering it’s an unfortunate look for the only really prominent female character in the story, not to mention a returning classic character. However, while it’s a tad uncomfortable, I think it’s all in service of the story. This is ultimately a story about broken people finding redemption and forgiveness and a new life beyond what they had before. And it leads to such a beautiful scene between Matt and Karen where after she tells him what she did, he reassures her that he hasn’t lost a thing, nothing that really matters. It helps to reinforce the themes of finding a new redeemed life, and establishes that he’s not the only one who was born again!

The other most important aspect, as mentioned earlier, involves the debut of Nuke. Fisk gives a masterclass in emotional manipulation, convincing Nuke that they’re both passionate patriots, and sics him on Hell’s Kitchen in order to draw out Daredevil. The damage that Nuke is able to do is catastrophic but leads to one of the best endings to an issue, in a storyline full to the brim of amazing endings! Fisk’s plan works and Daredevil is drawn back out, finally donning his costume again, which is so nice to see after everything he’s been through! The final shot of Daredevil standing tall, ready to face off against Nuke as the fires in Hell’s Kitchen rage behind him is one of the coolest in comics! Daredevil is finally back, and ready to finish this classic story, next issue!

Comments: Part six of Born Again. First appearance of Nuke. Glori begins working for the Daily Bugle.
