Marvelous Adventures of Gus Beezer: Hulk, The (2003 series) #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

Gus Beezer is playing Hulk while his friend Autumn Amber portrays She-Hulk; Gus proclaims he is strongest so Autumn says she is stronger and proves it by giving Gus a wedgie. His new friend Dunbar (whom he actually despises) stops by for Mrs. Beezer’s cookies. Dunbar and Gus are in a hurry to get to the comic shop for the new INCREDIBLE HULK issue to find out how the cliffhanger (Abomination has buried Hulk in cement) turns out but Gus must finish his chores before he can go. Gus persuades Autumn to help him (playing Hulk and She-Hulk) and he dashes to the comic shop to find that Dunbar bought the last copy of HULK. Gus is frustrated that his parents won’t listen to his lament so he tries to make them listen by painting himself green and claiming to be the Hulk. This earns him a bath….

Gus makes a deal with Dunbar so the next day in school, Gus plays cheerleader for Dunbar which earns him a peek at he first page of the comic…which is only a recap of the previous issue’s ending. Then word comes that the real Hulk has been sighted outside the school. The school is evacuated and Mr. Beezer offers to drive Autumn and Dunbar home. Dad stops off at his work site while Gus trades his pudding cup for a peek at p[age two. Then the real Hulk shows up behind Gus; Dunbar and Autumn yell and flee but Gus just thinks it’s a prank…and then he spots Hulk’s footprint. He runs around the construction site but is the only one who doesn’t see the Hulk. His Dad rams Hulk with a bulldozer and the front end caves in. Hulk departs, still without Gus seeing him. They wonder why Hulk was there. Gus wonders if maybe he was just lonely….

Some distance away, Hulk finds Gus’ pudding…

That night, Gus finally reads the new HULK issue—and discovers the story is continued in the next issue….

Rating: 3.5 stars

While pretending to be Hulk, Gus discovers his dog Zabu has stolen his ultra-rare Wolverine action figure and buried it. Gus then presents a comic book he drew about his dog: Marvel Kid (Gus) and Marvel Dog (Zabu) return from patrol and Gus has to leave to appear in his school play, leaving Zabu to protect the city. There is an emergency and the Mayor shines the dog-signal in the sky but Zabu is asleep. A long time later, he awakens and responds to the signal: the President’s cat is caught in a tree! Marvel Dog acts crazy and scares the cat out of the tree. The President thanks him. When Gus returns home he assumes Zabu had a quiet night.

Review / Commentaries

Marvelous Adventures of Gus Beezer: Hulk, The (2003 series) #1 Review by (January 29, 2025)

Review: Gus Beezer, the comic book-obsessed kid makes a return appearance, this time with the Hulk. And again, he misses the super guy he idolizes while chaos erupts around him. Decent all-ages comic plays better for kids. And I understand his disappointment with discovering Marvel stories span multiple issues; it’s why I favored DC when in my single digits.

Comments: The second story runs along the bottom of the main story. First appearance of Gus’ friends, Autumn and Dunbar.
