Synopsis

Monica Rambeau: Photon (2023 series) #2 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Photon (Monica Rambeau), who moments ago was travelling through space, suddenly finds herself aboard her boat the Willie Mae on Lake Pontchartrain with no clue as to how she got there. She sees a meteor falling from the sky toward the city. She flies up to meet it, planning to phase into it and blow it into smaller pieces. But she is trapped by the Darkforce sapping her power; it crashes into the lake and Monica passes out…

…awakening aboard the Willie Mae to meet a dark-skinned androgenous person calling themself the Beyonder, claiming this is their first meeting. Monica has met the Beyonder before and recognizes their MO and wonders what they are up to. Then the Avengers (Captain America, She-Hulk, Black Knight, Thor and Dr. Druid), who call Monica their leader, arrive, having traced Beyonder’s energy readings. This blast from the past staggers Monica, whom the others call Captain Marvel. Bored, the Beyonder teleports them and the boat onto a New Orleans street. They explain wanting to learn more about desire and then sensing Photon whose powers almost rivaled his own, they decided they had to meet her. Druid then accuses Monica of being an ally of the villain and suggests they take a vote to determine if she is fit to lead the Avengers. She flies around in a flash, passing a giant alligator as the city turns into a jungle, and returning to the boat, demanding to know why the Avengers are so busy criticizing her that they are ignoring people in danger. She accuses the Beyonder of manipulating them…

…and then the Beyonder has taken her into an all-white nowhere where B wants to talk. Monica says that the Beyonder always feels the world is broken and if he can fix it by giving everyone what they want, the world will be better and Beyonder will have a place he fits in. But the Beyonder is not like anyone else and he can’t fix anything so she pleads with them to stay in their own corner of the universe and send her back to hers. But they responds that they did not send her anywhere, she attracted them to her (as they are building a garden with a cat and a tree swing). They show her a movie of the old professor explaining that the barrier between worlds is breaking down and that is how they detected her. Monica recalls the Stone of Hala and asks to be taken back to the Avengers. She is and the Beyonder even changes the jungle back into the city. With all of her fussing, the Avengers wonder if she is living a delusion. Dr. Druid mentions her parents’ death but she insists they are alive which is more evidence of a delusion. She teleports them all to her parents’ house where she is met by her husband, Jericho Drumm….
