Thor #16 Review by (August 28, 2019)

Review: No plot, brief turns by a multitude of characters, and some soppy farewells: par for the course in a final issue. Jason Aaron will wrap up his run in the four-issue KING THOR coming soon and that will be that. Mike del Mundo’s run ends here and, while I can’t say I especially enjoyed his mosaic-type artwork, it was certainly distinctive and fit at least someone’s vision of what a comic so steeped in mythology and fantasy should look like. So there will be a new THOR #1 coming not many months from now and we’ll see what that looks like.

Comments: Final issue of series. Marco D'Alfonso collaborated on the coloring. Issue includes an essay by Jason Aaron looking back on his seven-year run on Thor and praising current artist Mike del Mundo; and Del Mundo look back on his (shorter) tenure on Thor with gladness.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Thor #16 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Thor is helping rebuild a small church that was destroyed in Mississippi while in Asgard everyone is wondering why he hasn’t shown up for the big celebration to honor him as the new All-Father. Odin especially is yelling, as he is accompanied by Young Thor and King Thor….

Meanwhile, the new Valkyrie (Jane Foster) and Heimdall talk about recent changes, including a new Bifrost Garden and Watchtower Tree as Volstagg welcomes T’Challa the Black Panther, Midgard’s new senator in the Congress of Worlds….

And Beta Ray Bill and Throg marvel at how peace has been made with the trolls who are rebuilding Asgard while Thori is still trying to understand “peace.”…

Ulik, Enchantress, and Sindr are imprisoned within the roots of the tree guarded by the Ministers Three (Hogun, Fandral, and Hildegarde)….

Roz Solomon is miffed that Dario Agger got off scot-free as Sif wonders where Thor is.

Thor is in Australia, delivering a heart for transplant to Sydney via Mjolnir….

Balder and the League of Realms are in Svartalfheim preparing to rescue one of the Norns from an evil Dark Elf….

Freyja turns over baby Laussa (born in ANGELA: ASGARD’S ASSASSIN #1) to be cared for by Gaea….

Loki arrives in Asgard and to show he has changed he’s brought a present: Thor’s goat Toothgnasher (killed by Mangog in THE MIGHTY THOR #700) alive and well….

Thor has arrived in Svartalfheim, bearing food for the starving Dark Elves (having stolen it from the buffet at the Congress of Worlds and sorely missed by Volstagg)….

Odin hasn’t gotten to tell Thor how proud he is of him but Freyja draws him away for some alone time….

As those assembled toast Thor, King Thor and Young Thor choose to return to their own times. On reaching his own era, Young Thor, as yet unworthy, looks at Mjolnir but decides it can wait. King Thor heads to the far future only to be attacked by King Loki….
