Story Name:

Birds Of Stymphalis (Part 1)

Synopsis

Incredible Hulk #112 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

World War Hulk is over...only Hercules doesn't seem to know it yet. Herc is drinking casks of wine in honor of Hulk, with whom he feels a dark kinship (having killed his own wife and children) when he and his team—Amadeus Cho, Namora, Angel—are surrounded by SHIELD forces led by Gabe Jones. Namora and Angel are offered amnesty and leave. Herc and Amadeus are accused of more serious crimes. Herc submits quietly which Amadeus assumes is a ploy to escape and he is quite angry when he discovers it is not a ruse. Hercules is brought before his brother Ares who has held a grudge ever since Herc killed Ares' sacred birds at Stymphalis during his twelve labors many centuries ago. Ares tells Herc to accept the amnesty offered by Tony Stark and the first of his new labors will be to rebuild Avengers Tower—singlehandedly. Meanwhile, Gabe Jones is reminding Amadeus Cho about the huge loss of homes and property caused by his pal Hulk; Jones offers him a job coordinating the restoration project but Amadeus refuses, not trusting the government. Then Ares comes flying through the tent, propelled by Hercules' punch and Herc and Amadeus take off. They dash into a tunnel where Amadeus calculates the right spot for Herc to hit to cause a flood, deterring their pursuers but carrying the two heroes in a car to the water's surface. Amadeus, having stolen Jones' laptop, suggests a war on SHIELD. When Jones tries to destroy the laptop remotely he finds Amadeus has booby-trapped it. So they call in the big guns: Ares, Wonder Man, and Black Widow....

Story continued in INCREDIBLE HERCULES #113.

Incredible Hulk #112 Review by (April 3, 2018)

Review: We've heard of “Garfield Without Garfield” so here's “Hulk Without Hulk.” This is the transitional issue for a change of title and focus and it does a halfway decent job of setting up the comic's new direction. It looks pretty cool but right now I'm writing up Hulk issues and this one was bothering me so I added it for completeness' sake.

New Review: Okay, so now I am writing up Hercules issues and yes, it is pretty cool. An abashed Greek god discovers he was on the wrong side and finds he must atone for the trouble he has caused. And then, since his courage is greater than his intelligence, he fights his way out again and goes on the run, with a smart-Alec genius on his side—this time to take revenge against SHIELD. But we are reminded along with Herc of the deaths of his wife and children, which he himself committed under the spell of madness from Hera. Herc is an entertaining character to read, largely because of his larger-than-life qualities and the mental deficiencies which keep him grounded. Another nice bit is that they are recounting Herc’s Twelve Labors along the way, to put this guy into perspective.

Comments: The cover has the word “HERC” painted over HULK in the title; next issue sees the title officially changed to THE INCREDIBLE HERCULES. Cover is homage to THE INCREDIBLE HULK SPECIAL #1 (1968). Bannered “World War Hulk: Aftersmash.”
