The Mighty Thor #18 Review by (August 10, 2012)
Review: At least I think that’s what the story is about…to be honest, this is the first issue I have read since #6 and I’m still not sure what’s going on. What happened to Odin? Why is Thor’s mom running Asgard? Where is Asgard anyway? Loki’s grown-up again? So, speaking as a guy who wasn’t following the series closely, here’s my review: I like Alan Davis. A lot. So anything he draws gets a rave from me even if the story is terrible. And the story is pretty good though, being a prologue, it can only toss out weird stuff to set up the ensuing story arc while we wait to see how it all comes together. This one seems fairly straightforward: Surtur and the Vanir are going to burn down Asgard. Problem is, this will be at least the third time the home of the Aesir has been destroyed in eight years—and that’s from a reader who doesn’t follow the series closely. Instead of “Everything Burns,” they should have called it “Apocaylpse—Again?!?” We’ll see if Fraction and Gillen can set this apart from the other similar epics.

Comments: This is the 50th Anniversary issue; Thor debuted in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #83, August 1962. Odin and Surtur appear only in flashbacks. Story continues in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #642.

Updated Review: I was right: the story is rather straightforward thus far and doesn’t depend on a detailed knowledge of what has gone before—but that’s true only of this prologue. The only thing I needed to add in the synopsis was the name of Jeff Fischer from issues #14-17; he makes his only appearance in the miniseries here. Otherwise my reference to “Apocalypse—Again?!?” still stands.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

The Mighty Thor #18 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Freyja the All-Mother of Asgardia awakens from a nightmare in which everything is burning….

Thor is in Broxton, helping the local fire department put out a blazing church—but neither his rain nor his snow affects the fire. And a report comes in of another burning church…. In the school, a Goth kid Jeff Fischer’s eyes glow red and he begins carving ancient runes into his desk. Meanwhile, birds are falling from the sky in flames, their eyes glowing red; Loki witnesses this and is uncertain as to whether he is responsible for it. He reports to the All-Mother and Freyja tells him of a dream/memory she had of her father….

A long, long time ago, there was a feud between the Aesir and the Vanir; Odin visited Freyr, Freyja’s father, at his home to negotiate a way to head off war. Freyr refuses and when Odin gives him an ultimatum, he stalks out. The Vanir chief makes a deal with Surtur the Fire Demon for his aid—aid that comes with a price…. The following morning, the two armies meet and the Vanir forces, their eyes glowing red, declare war. This war is eventually settled by the wedding of Odin and Freyja, ensuring peace….

Today, Thor returns to Asgardia suffering from burn wounds. Loki ministers to his needs while being puzzled by a fire that burns even the gods….

In Valhalla, Bill and Kelda look out a window and view a scene of horror: Yggdrasil the World Tree is in flames….

Story continues in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #642.
