Wolverine and Captain America: Weapon Plus #1 Review by (January 21, 2020)

Review: First issue of a series? The issue itself doesn’t complete the story and teases an issue 2 at the end yet most comic sites are calling this a one-shot. We’ll have to see. Meanwhile, it’s an info-heavy intro to what looks to be a complicated and confusing conspiracy drama. Cap and Logan always make a nice balanced team and adding a third hero who is presumed dead for the entire issue is rather offbeat, especially if this really is a one-shot. Really would have liked to see Fantomex taking a more active role than expositor.

Comments: The title comes from a quote by Abraham Lincoln, describing the United States of America. Fantomex a/k/a Weapon XIII was introduced in NEW X-MEN #128 and was a member of various X-teams, most notably X-Force. The list of projects in the lab includes Brute Force, Ted Sallis (Man-Thing), Venom, Nick Fury, Dr Burstein (Luke Cage’s creator), and Nuke.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Wolverine and Captain America: Weapon Plus #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

On a visit to New York, Captain America sees the spacecraft E.V.A. crash to the ground and an injured Wolverine falls out. The holograph image of mutant/cyborg Fantomex appears and addresses them but they are attacked by a band of green-visored killers. Cap and Logan tear into them, discovering that they are strong, fast—and easily destroyed. Cap unmasks one to find his own face looking back. The Fantomex recording tells Cap that all the varied super-soldier projects since he was created are connected and inspired by Cap’s example….

1945: Young Billy Junger dresses as Cap and stands up to bullies, unsuccessfully, and then the news reports that Captain America and Bucky are missing and presumed dead….

The Fantomex tape continues relating how he uncovered the big weapons conspiracy and the notes of a murdered reporter led him to a Cap fan named Billy Junger and coordinates….

1953: Billy Junger demands to be included in super-soldier trials and his fanatical determination and threats lead to his being added to the project….

Cap and Logan discover a hidden underground lab with subjects still in glass tanks. A cyborg bear smashes loose and attacks the two heroes. The fight is brutal and futile until Cap realizes it is being controlled remotely and smashes the receiver in its head….

1974: Super-strong Billy Junger, still wanting to serve his country, is encouraged by a scientist to continue his work, the last great [sic] hope of Earth….

Cap and Logan trace the bear’s signal to the Swiss Alps, arriving in E.V.A. to discover everyone at the lab has been killed recently and info on “Weapon XXX” being purged. The killer is a psychopath called Adam in a Captain America uniform who is stronger than the two of them and has Wolverine’s healing factor as well. As they fight, Junger, from a remote location, orders the lab destroyed. Logan smells the coming explosion and he and Cap barely make it out, caught by E.V.A. in midair, though Adam dies. The two vow to track down Weapon XXX for the sake of Billy Junger and others; Junger though vows to remind Cap of what he once stood for, as something ghastly percolates in the tank behind him….
