World War Hulk: Aftersmash - Damage Control #1 Review by (January 25, 2022)

Review: And Damage Control is back, years after a trio of limited series furnished more laughs than any other Marvel comics of that era. And they are welcome, taking the dark edge off of the WWHulk event. This issue mainly sets up the situation for the three issue tie-in and focuses on the usual character notes and chaotic dealings at DC. So they got the job, crews are assembled, and the Thunderbolts arrive to pull the trick with the Superhuman Registration Act like a bunch of spoilsports. More to come. And it feels really weird to be referring to a group in a Marvel comic as DC.

Comments: Story takes place after the conclusion to WORLD WAR HULK (of course!). Damage Control appeared briefly in WOLVERINE (2003 series) #43-47, wherein Walter Declun takes over Damage Control for a short time, mentioned in this issue. Tom Foster’s first appearance as Black Goliath. Monstro (Frank Johnson) was introduced in AMAZING FANTASY (2005 series) #15. Too many cameos to list, see the Marvel Database. Second story also appears in IRON MAN AND POWER PACK #3 as part of a longer Mini-Marvels story, published the same month.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

World War Hulk: Aftersmash - Damage Control #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

In the aftermath of World War Hulk, SHIELD Director Tony Stark meets with Ann-Marie Hoag, CEO of Damage Control about having her organization rebuild the devastated New York City. Tony balks at the high price tag but Mrs. Hoag assures him that it is no negotiating tactic but the actual cost. Tony agrees….

Mrs. Hoag calls John Porter to inform him they got the job and are returning to their old headquarters in the Flatiron Building; she also tells Robin Chapel (who is sleeping with John) she is rehired as Director of Operations at a hefty salary increase. Gene Strausser is freed from prison to return to work at DC….

Tom Foster, the new Black Goliath, stops by DC’s office wanting to help with the clean-up but the place is so busy he is told to wait; even growing to giant size does not impress anyone. At the staff meeting, legal adviser Kathleen O’Meara tells them that any superheroes working with their cleanup crews must be registered; Robin tells Lenny Ballinger that they can work around the law….

Black Goliath joins many, many heroes at the construction site with Lenny and Monstro but the Thunderbolts arrive, Moonstone announcing that everyone produce their registration cards….

“The Insult That Made an Iron Man out of ‘Max’”
Everything: Chris Giarrusso
Synopsis: A Mini Marvels parody of the then well-known Charles Atlas bodybuilding advertisements shows Max being embarrassed by a beach bully, going off and buying an Iron Man suit from Tony Stark and taking revenge against the bully. Iron Man asks Wolverine what he thinks of the ad; Logan sees problems.
