X-Men vs. the Avengers, The (1987 series) #3 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

As the X-Men fly overhead with Magneto safely aboard, the Soviet Super-Soldiers are still captives of the Darkforce; they manage to snap Darkstar out of the hypnotic trance Dr Druid put her under so that she trapped her allies while thinking she held her enemies. Crimson Dynamo rallies the team to go after them, accidentally letting slip that he hates mutants, which the team members are....

Back in Kampuchea, the Avengers are trying to determine where the X-Men have gone, when they are mystically contacted by Dr Druid who is hiding invisibly aboard the X-Men's Blackbird—but Druid is detected and his memories are stolen by Rogue. The Blackbird is damaged and they have to make an emergency landing in Singapore....

When Dr Druid recovers his memories he calls the Avengers to let them know where to come, along with the Soviet heroes who are following stealthily. As the Avengers search the city for the X-Men, the disguised Vanguard has a dangerous encounter with Wolverine and Rogue. Discovered, the X-Men take off aboard a Dutch freighter. Magneto is pondering whether he can use the circuitry recovered from his fallen asteroid base to wipe out prejudice from the human race. But the Super-Soldiers arrive and demand Magneto be turned over to them. A battle between the opposing mutant teams breaks out and a distress call is sent by the ship's captain, bringing the Avengers. Crimson Dynamo goes extreme and blast a hole in the side of the ship which Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau) tries to repair but can't. The Avengers, the X-Men, and the Soviet Super-Soldiers join forces to rescue the crew of the sinking ship. When Crimson Dynamo appears, Darkstar takes him captive, accusing him of sabotaging the ship—ironically repeating a crime he wanted Magneto executed for. The Soviets take CM to turn him over to the maritime authorities, trusting the others to deal with Magneto....

Miles away, Magneto is on another ship headed back to Singapore, though the captain doesn't recognize him from the cruise....

Comments: The issue includes an advertisement for the film THRASHIN' starring Josh Brolin, with everyone unaware that thirty years later, Brolin would be a major movie star and have roles in both the Avengers and X-Men film series.
