In the X-Men’s Danger Room, Nightcrawler is shocked by
something he sees in the paper and cries out! Wolverine decides to mess with
him by cutting down the athletic ring he’s hanging from, resulting in the two
nearly coming to blows. Colossus breaks up the possible fight, and Nightcrawler
decides to head out, stating that there’s something he needs to attend to,
alone! Meanwhile, at Coney Island, Peter and Mary Jane are in the midst of a
double date with Harry and Liz. The four of them ride a roller-coaster, leaving
Peter feeling uncharacteristically uneasy. Once off the ride, they decide to
grab some food, and while chowing down, Peter is shocked to see someone shot by
a sniper at the top of the roller-coaster they were just on! Peter runs off
with the excuse of taking photos, while MJ feels frustrated at yet another
failed date. Winding back a few minutes, Nightcrawler also prowls around the
amusement park, having learned from the paper that an old friend of his from
the circus was killed around here not too long ago. Nightcrawler then hears the
shot and witnesses the new victim fall as well, before spotting the shooter
right above him! The shooter drops the gun right at Nightcrawler’s feet, and he
climbs up the building but finds that the shooter is already gone!
As Nightcrawler retrieves the gun in order to make
sure the police find it, he’s attacked by Spider-Man, who thinks he’s the
killer! Nightcrawler fights back, before Spidey webs his tail to the wall.
Nightcrawler rips the chunk out of the wall and flings it at Spidey, before
making off with the gun, thinking in turn that Spidey might be the killer! The
two end up scampering up a Ferris Wheel, and Spider-Man ends up pinning
Nightcrawler at the top. Nightcrawler drops the gun, allowing the police below
to catch it. Spider-Man’s words make Nightcrawler realize Spidey isn’t the
killer, and he teleports away, to Spidey’s astonishment! A few minutes later,
Spider-Man retrieves his camera from the wall where he left it, while
Nightcrawler, watching from the shadows, realizes that Spidey took photos of
their encounter, and decides that he needs to get them back! Later, Spidey
drops by the Daily Bugle to ask Robbie what he knows about the recent snipings.
Robbie says that his sources claim it’s the work of the Punisher, as J. Jonah
Jameson ends up eavesdropping on their conversation. Spider-Man heads out,
while Jameson retreats to his office where he takes another look at those
photos he was anonymously sent (last issue). Showing Spider-Man disposing of
his dead clone, but looking to Jameson like Spider-Man killed Peter Parker,
Jameson thinks to himself that these photos will bring about the end of
Spider-Man!
Elsewhere, the Punisher tracks down a group of
mobsters at a rundown complex. He ends up killing all but one when they pull
their guns on him, and asks the remaining guy who’s been impersonating him and
killing innocent people! Across town, Spider-Man wonders himself why the
Punisher seems to be killing innocents now, when his spider-sense goes off.
Spider-Man ends up getting surprised and stunned by Nightcrawler, who
apologizes before grabbing Spidey’s camera and running off. Spidey quickly
catches up with him and Nightcrawler returns the camera after removing the
film, even offering to repay Spidey for it. Spidey attacks him anyway and
knocks Nightcrawler off the tramway support they’re on. Nightcrawler teleports
back to the top and the two end up tussling perched on the tramway cables.
Before another fight can really resume, both are knocked off by an approaching
cable car. Spidey and Nightcrawler both snag a wire, as the cable car comes to
a stop and the Punisher leans out. Thinking that one of them is the man who’s
been impersonating him, he aims his gun, and plans to kill whoever is
responsible! To be continued!
