Synopsis

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #107 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

Spencer Smythe has Spider-Man trapped with his newest Spider Slayer! A mix of strong cables and ethyl chloride gas keeps Spidey immobile. Smythe ties Spider-Man to the front of his robot and pilots it back to his lair, to present the defeated Spider-Man to the gang bosses he’s allied himself with! Now that they believe Spider-Man is out of the way, they can move ahead with their plan to use Smythe’s access to the spy cameras set up all over the city to pull off the perfect crime! Spidey bides his time to recover his strength while over at ESU, Randy shows Gwen the news coverage of their protest against the spy cameras. Gwen takes off, wondering where Peter could be, when she’s stopped by a frantic Flash Thompson needing to talk to her. Flash admits that he feels more for her than just friendship, but she makes her stance on her relationship with Peter clear. She can tell there’s more Flash isn’t telling her, and he ominously says that he fears he can’t tell anyone!

Meanwhile, Spidey is tied up at Smythe’s lair, being guarded by his Spider Slayer, while Smythe mans the scanners to guide his companions through their bank robbery. Spidey is able to wiggle enough to snap the rope holding him to the ceiling and untangle himself as he falls. The Slayer gets ready to attack, but with Smythe needing to stay at the camera controls he’s unable to guide the robot, allowing Spidey to deal with it much more easily. He clogs the robot’s sensors with webbing and fiddles around inside the cockpit with the phone located there. Smythe barricades himself behind thick steel doors, leaving Spidey to head out to stop the robbery. Spidey quickly sees that the police got his anonymous call and are already starting to dismantle the scanners throughout the city. However, still being wanted, they end up shooting at him when he gets too close!

While the gang leaders get ready to hit the bank, they and Smythe suddenly discover that the scanners are being shut down when they lose picture and communication! The mob bosses think Smythe is double-crossing them, even more so when Spider-Man shows up to stop them, thinking Smythe let him go! Spidey tackles the mob bosses in his typical acrobatic style! Once they’re dealt with, he webs them up for the cops, who are confused why Spidey would take out his seeming accomplices like that! Spidey heads back to Smythe’s lair where Smythe is waiting for him inside his Spider Slayer! However, Smythe’s robot almost immediately short circuits, as Spidey reveals that he fiddled with the controls earlier when he had access to the cockpit! Spidey leaves Smythe and his robot webbed up before paying J. Jonah Jameson a visit. He essentially threatens Jameson not to try anything like this again and Jameson agrees (while having his fingers crossed). Glad that everything worked out, Spidey is then shocked to see Gwen and Flash walking arm in arm! However, things aren’t what they look like, when Flash is suddenly driven away by some military officials, leaving a fearful Gwen in their wake! To be continued!

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #107 Review by (October 22, 2025)

Review: Spidey has been captured by Spencer Smythe who’s going to use his access to the spy cameras all over the city to revolutionize crime! The issue presents these as seemingly insurmountable odds early on, with the cover promising Spidey’s greatest victory! In actuality, this issue feels like the epitome of the catchphrase from the (excellent) Youtube series Pitch Meeting, “actually it’s gonna be super easy, barely an inconvenience!” Spidey needs to stop the Spider Slayer? Fiddle with the controls when Smythe is distracted, causing it to short circuit without a fight later! Spy cameras set up all over the city used for nefarious purposes? One anonymous call to the police is apparently enough to get them to immediately start dismantling the scanners! I guess the protests helped too. We do still get some nice art and stretched out action courtesy of Romita (three whole pages to take down some generic mobsters), but overall this issue was fairly solid. While perfectly in character, the way Spidey defeated Smythe still feels a little anticlimactic. The issue ends with Flash getting taken away by some mysterious personnel, leading to us finally learn what’s been going on with him, next issue!

Comments: There’s a guy in one panel who’s identified as Harry, but we only see half of the back of his head in that single panel, making his inclusion in the characters section feel a little dubious. This issue establishes that ethyl chloride can weaken Spider-Man, much like it does real spiders, though this idea will be used sparingly in the future.
