Having been trapped in the sewer last issue by the
Shocker, Spider-Man struggles to keep his head above water as the tunnel fills
up! Realizing he can’t shift the debris, he decides to try and swim for the
next manhole shaft. He makes it there but before he can climb up, he gets
caught in a deluge and swept through the sewer, eventually tumbling out into
the east river. Realizing Mary Jane won’t be too happy with his disappearing
act, Spidey decides to head home and change before heading back to the party. Speaking
of, the party is finally wrapping up and J. Jonah Jameson is ushering the last
of the guests out just as Peter makes his return. Jameson tells him that Mary
Jane left awhile ago and not in a happy mood, before ushering him out
too so he can get some sleep! Meanwhile, a mysterious, haggard figure rummages
through the trash in an alley for something to drink, unable to believe he got
to this point. After finding the smallest drop, he shambles out of the alley
before reacting in shock to something unseen, running off while telling the
object of his fear to leave him alone!
The next day, Peter makes his way down the cafeteria
lunch line, at a loss of what to pick from all of the “stellar” options. Mary
Jane then bumps into him, and Peter abandons his plight to try and talk to her
after she’s been avoiding him all day! He’s forced to grab his plate as Mary
Jane refuses to talk to him, still upset over Peter having abandoned her at the
party the previous night. Flash then calls Peter over to sit with him and
Harry, and tells him the news that Harry agreed to be his new roommate! After
noticing how much Harry is enjoying his food, Peter offers his plate as well,
having suddenly lost his appetite after noticing what he was given. Some time
later, the mayor airs a tape sent to him by the Shocker, demanding one million
dollars in cash or else he’ll blackout the whole city! The mayor publicly
states his refusal to submit to blackmail, and the watching Spidey applauds his
tenacity.
Realizing that Shocker will need to attack the city’s
power plants in order to make good on his threat, Spidey starts checking out
each plant one by one. He eventually comes to one in Queens, and notices that
the guard stationed there has been propped up against the wall to make it look
like everything’s okay. He heads inside and makes his way through the plant,
eventually coming upon Shocker. Shocker pins Spidey to the wall with his
vibro-blast until he’s distracted by two guards. As Shocker handles the guards
Spidey makes his way up to a catwalk and snags Shocker by the feet with his
webs, stringing him up from the catwalk upside down! Spidey then gets attacked
by the guards himself and is forced to contend with them, giving Shocker the
chance to free himself. Spidey and Shocker tangle some more, until Shocker
begins to power up a full-power blast! Spidey then webs Shocker’s thumbs to his
gauntlet triggers, causing him to be unable to turn off his blast! Now unable
to control the recoil, Shocker’s own blasts send him ricocheting all over the
room, as he eventually knocks himself out against a wall! With Shocker
defeated, Spider-Man leaves him for the cops, who admit that maybe they owe
Spidey another one!
