A weary Spider-Man stresses about all of the worries going on in his life. Jameson is in the hospital because he lost his temper, he still has the stolen tablet and is still being blamed for its theft, not to mention his usual money troubles. Peter then hears Harry coming home and narrowly avoids Harry seeing him in his Spidey outfit. Peter then checks his camera and realizes he got some great photos of himself fighting the Kingpin, but realizes that with Jameson in the hospital, he has no one to buy them from him. Elsewhere, Quicksilver speeds into New York, on a mission to find the Avengers. After he, Scarlet Witch, and Toad were forced to help Magneto recently (in Avengers #53), Quicksilver wants to prove that they aren’t evil and figures the Avengers would believe him.

Quicksilver runs to Avengers mansion, finding only Jarvis there, who tells Quicksilver that the Avengers are in Africa. Thinking his mission is in vain, Quicksilver decides to redeem himself some other way, and when he sees a newspaper headline about Spider-Man being on the run, decides he’ll capture Spidey to prove his heroism. Meanwhile, Joe Robertson visits a still unconscious J. Jonah Jameson in the hospital, where he runs into Jonah’s son, John. Robbie realizes that with Jameson in the hospital for weeks, he’ll be in charge in the interim, but John assures him no one could do a better job. Robbie heads to the Bugle, where Peter shows him the photos of Spider-Man fighting the Kingpin. Robbie is very impressed, as the photos even clearly exonerate Spider-Man, and even pays Peter much more than he is used to, to Peter’s absolute delight. With one worry off his chest, Spidey heads to see Captain Stacy and deposits the stolen tablet with him.

With things suddenly looking up, Spidey swings off until he’s intercepted by Quicksilver. Quicksilver announces that he plans to capture Spidey, whose pleas of innocence fall on deaf ears. Spidey finds himself unable to avoid Quicksilver, and finds it equally difficult to land a hit, as he quickly starts to get overwhelmed. Meanwhile, Ned Leeds brings Jameson the paper, who obviously flips out when his paper claims to show proof of Spider-Man’s innocence! Though Spidey still can‘t hit Quicksilver, Quicksilver realizes that just hitting Spidey isn’t doing a lot of good and decides to take the fight out of him by running around him in a circle to create a suction updraft! Spidey feels himself losing oxygen and realizes he needs to act and cleverly sticks his arm right out to the side so that Quicksilver slams right into it! Spidey makes off with Quicksilver and explains everything once he awakens. Quicksilver decides to find his redemption another way and Spidey swings off, wondering if maybe his luck is finally changing.

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #71 Review by (February 12, 2025)

Review: Spidey encounters Quicksilver, who wants to redeem himself after recently being forced to help Magneto, and decides that capturing the fugitive Spider-Man is the best way to do that! Before that though, Spidey has some things to wrap up from previous issues. He proves his innocence and earns some money by selling his Spidey photos to Robbie and gets rid of the stolen by tablet by dropping it off with Captain Stacy (which he really should have thought of a couple issues ago). Since all of these things get cleared up in the first half of the issue, the main plot of Spidey fighting Quicksilver almost feels like an afterthought to keep the issue going. Quicksilver initially tries to go to the Avengers before finding out they’re in Africa, which you would think wouldn’t really be an obstacle for him, though maybe he couldn’t do the whole “running across oceans” thing yet. He then arbitrarily decides to capture Spidey after seeing a newspaper headline. The fight between Spidey and Quicksilver is pretty cool, though the ending is the most memorable part. Everything gets cleared up with two seconds of actual communication making for a rather abrupt end to this solid, if not spectacular, issue.

Comments: First meeting between Spider-Man and Quicksilver. Quicksilver recounts when he, Scarlet Witch, and Toad were forced to help Magneto which occurred in Avengers #53.
