When Iceman Attacks

Synopsis

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #92 synopsis by Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

Last issue, Spider-Man returned to his apartment to find Gwen and Sam Bullit already there! In order to divert suspicion, Spidey tries something drastic and suddenly grabs Gwen and swings out of the window with her! Spidey bashes himself as Peter to ensure Gwen doesn’t connect things, while Bullit gleefully thinks that Spider-Man’s actions will only help his campaign. In the crowd below, Bobby Drake happens to see Spidey swing off with Gwen and quickly ditches his date in order to chase Spidey down as Iceman! Iceman quickly catches up with Spidey and attacks him, while Spidey realizes that he has no way to really explain this. Spidey and Iceman tussle a little bit before the cops show up to cordon off the area. Realizing things have gotten out of hand, Spidey swings off, hoping his ruse helped to divert any suspicions Gwen may have had.

Bullit decides to use the situation to his advantage, making the press think Iceman works for him so that if he does catch Spidey, Bullit will still get the credit! Over the coming days, Bullit continues his tirade against Spider-Man. Bullit then gets a sudden call from J. Jonah Jameson, telling him that the Bugle is rescinding their support of him! Bullit heads the Bugle to try and intimidate Jameson into backing him again. When there, Jameson and Joe Robertson make Bullit aware of some things they’ve learned about him, namely that he’s got a lot of backing from certain hate groups and his plans for minorities once he’s in office! Bullit then tries to intimidate Robbie and Jameson promises to use the evidence they’ve gathered to bring him down, and kicks Bullit out of his office! Later, Peter spots Bullit’s guys leading Robbie out of his office and decides to tail them, having expected something like this might happen.

Peter switches to Spidey and chases after the car Robbie was taken in, only to get snagged mid-air by Iceman! Iceman chases Spidey, who tries to explain the direness of the situation to no avail. Iceman still thinks Spidey is up to no good and Spidey is forced to incapacitate him to resume chasing the car. Spidey follows the car to an abandoned warehouse where Bullit has his guys tie up Robbie and tells his men to kill Robbie once he’s gone! Just after, Spidey notices Iceman has arrived and heard the whole thing. Now on the same side, the two of them stop Bullit’s men from killing Robbie and use their powers in conjunction to stylishly take out all of the goons. Minutes later, they crash a fundraising banquet that Bullit is speaking at to reveal that Bullit’s men, along with Robbie, told the police everything! Bullit is revealed for what he is, losing any support he had, before he’s led away by the police.

Review / Commentaries

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #92 Review by (July 9, 2025)

Review: Spidey continues to be hounded by D.A. prospect Sam Bullit, leading him into confrontation with Iceman! It’s a truly random guest appearance; Iceman just kind of shows up out of nowhere. The original run on X-Men had ended pretty recently at this point so I imagine they were trying to keep the characters in reader’s minds while they figured out what to do with them. The main plot really involves wrapping up the Sam Bullit storyline. Instead of just being a shady conservative, Bullit is revealed to be a raging racist as well! This gives Jameson yet another chance to prove his integrity and put a racist in his place when he and Robbie publicly pull their support and confront him with the evidence of the hate groups he’s associated with! This causes Bullit to try and have Robbie killed which is naturally averted by Spidey and Iceman. The Bullit storyline is then wrapped up neatly and abruptly when he’s taken away and promptly never seen or mentioned again! And through it all, Iceman is just kind of there; he doesn’t really feel like he fits in with the rest of the plot. Still, overall a pretty solid issue.

Comments: Guest appearance by Iceman.

Additonal Comment from Peter Silvestro: The cover image of Iceman was used for his Marvel Value Stamp.
