Magneto, Master Of Magnetism vs the Invincible Iron Man

Synopsis

AvX: Vs (2012 series) #1 synopsis by reviewer Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars

The Avengers have attacked the X-Men on Utopia island in San Francisco Bay. Now Iron Man and Magneto have settled into their own fight. Magneto wonders why metal-armoured Tony Stark would choose to fight *him* and then realises that he's brought an armour based on carbon nanotubes. So Erik Lehnsherr has to change tactics. He uses his magnetic power to raise 1 of Utopia's towers and drop it on his foe. But Stark's system is still running and he launches a storm of 2 million neodymium high-grade magnets at the mutant. Not surprisingly Magneto is able to send them back to the source, who has to defend himself with repulsor rays.

The Avengers are here to take into 'protective custody' young Hope Summers because the cosmic Phoenix Force is coming for her. They fear the world won't survive but the mutants led by Cyclops hope for a resurgence in mutants after they were decimated on M-Day. Cyclops is spinning the attack as anti-mutant hatred and Magneto builds on that here by comparing the Avengers to the guards who herded Erik and other Jews into Auschwitz.

Iron Man knows his repulsor rays can't get through Magneto's magnetic forcefield  but he has to keep the pressure up so as not to give the enemy chance to disable his armour's computer system with an electromagnetic pulse. So he now pulls out his big gun to contact satellites orbiting Jupiter to transfer to him some of the humongous magnetic energy of that planet, which overwhelms Lehnsherr's own magnetism. But it's a brief victory until Maggie cuts IM's satellite link. Then he gathers metal debris to form his own armour, leading to an IM vs IM punch-up, but *he* now is channelling energy from nearer planets. Magneto is winning ...

... but then he suddenly stops fighting. He's somehow sensed the Phoenix Force destroying another planet in another solar system on its way here. And he realises that this fight isn't worth fighting compared with what they'll have to prepare for. Tony lays a punch that leaves his foe limp and then flies away. He doesn't hear Erik trying to tell him to find his daughter Wanda Maximoff because they're going to need the Scarlet Witch.

The Thing vs Namor the Sub-Mariner

Colorist: Jim Charalampidis.

Synopsis

Rating: 3.5 stars
Sub-Mariner hits Thing with a mighty blow that sends him flying up from San Francisco Bay to slam into the SHIELD Helicarrier above Utopia island. Accompanying fighter jets have to be restrained from firing at the 'projectile'. After causing some damage Ben Grimm 'surfs' a piece of metal down to the water again and returns the blow. The fight continues underwater where Thing can't keep up his banter and Subby has the advantage. Thing lands on a (pirate?) ship wreck and throws a treasure chest full of coins at his foe. They tussle hand-to-hand until Namor throws Ben into a thermal vent which provides him with some much-needed air. But a giant-size fish then tries to eat Subby but he grabs it by the tail and uses it as a club to bash Ben. Thing breaks 2 of it large fangs off and uses them to pin Namor to the seafloor. Then Ben wades ashore. But Sub-Mariner flies into the air behind him.

AvX: Vs (2012 series) #1 Review by (October 19, 2025)
This whole series consists of fights between individual Avengers and X-Men during the Avengers Vs X-Men event.

This 1st issue has 2 stories that expand on fights happening in AvX#2.

The Magneto/Iron Man spat takes place immediately after the part where Emma Frost fights IM, Magneto joins in and Quicksilver superspeeds from somewhere else and hits *him*. Emma and Pietro Maximoff aren't seen in this issue.
Magneto suggests they involve the Scarlet Witch. She was seen in AvX#2 with her brother Quicksilver before he sped off. But she won't actually get involved until AvX#6 (with a cameo in #5).

The Thing/Sub-Mariner fight starts with a Subby punch that that sends Thing from the water to crash into the SHIELD Helicarrier. That punch is also seen in AvX#2 but Namor there has a little underwater fight with Luke Cage before Ben Grimm returns to the water to continue their battle here. Cage isn't seen in this issue, despite being seen later in AvX#2 helping Thing fight Subby.

The editor is keeping score and counts these both as wins for the Avengers.
