In the Avengers’ monitor room, Black Widow tells Captain America that the scanners are picking up readings similar to that of the Gatherers and the settings have been adjusted to exclude their visitor the Swordsman. They are interrupted by the (phony) Vision to take his shift on the monitors….

In the workout room, Black Knight, Crystal, and Hercules are fighting a huge robot and together they take it down. But it suddenly revives, which should be impossible, and attacks them, using low-level lasers. Dane draws his laser sword and slices the thing to pieces, wondering what went wrong since Vision had just inspected it. Dane and Crystal are about to have a moment when Sersi enters, suspicious (we know she knows about Dane and Crys)….

Alone in the monitor room, Anti-Vision masks the sensor trace he is giving off. Now he can complete his mission to murder the Swordsman while exploring this new world and getting closer to Crystal when he is interrupted by Philip Javert, the Swordsman, asking for help in reviewing his old files, hoping to recover some of his lost memories. The Vision is glad to help….

Later, as Javert is telling Vision that he is his best friend, Vision attacks him and leaves him lying on the floor, apparently dead. Meanwhile, Marilla, having tended to baby Luna, spies Dane in the monitor room, puzzling over the mysterious signal that has suddenly vanished. At this time, the phony Vision enters Crystal’s bedroom, creeping over her as she sleeps. Marilla screams, having discovered Javert’s inert body. Black Knight comes running and then a shockwave hits the house, which Dane recognizes as one of Crystal’s moves. Crystal had caught Vision and responded with an Earth tremor; the angry Vision strikes back and he is clobbered by Hercules. Cap and Black Widow arrive and Vision seizes he opportunity to take down Herc with a hand through his brain. Vision reveals that he killed Cap in his world while taking down Nat and Cap. Dane dashes in and Vision hold Crys at his mercy, threatening to cut off the blood flow to her brain. Dane leaps at him but Vision goes insubstantial and he mocks the romantic yearnings of Crys and Dane which he overheard earlier. Which means he doesn’t see Sersi coming as she transmutes him—painfully—into a solid figure which she can reverse later. And Dane proclaims that with a hostage they can now take the fight to the Gatherers….

Avengers, The (1963 series) #362 Review by (September 5, 2025)
Comments: Part three of four parts. Fred Fredericks contributed to the inking.

Review: The first thing to note is that Steve Epting is not the penciler so it lacks the tense edge his art has loaned the series over the last several issues. No disrespect for the new guy (Gordon Purcell) but his art is merely okay. It is quite serviceable for the central event of the issue, everyone beating up the phony Vision but it could have had a more intense presentation. And the action has crowded out the Gann Josin complication. Not to worry, this comic will be around for a while.
