Synopsis

Avengers, The (1963 series) #365 synopsis by reviewer T Vernon
Rating: 3.5 stars

The Kree’s first attack comes in the Shanxi province of China, a bright light in the night sky turning into a wall of energy wiping out everything in its path. Four further incidents followed, killing thousands so the Avengers are exerting every effort to locate Admiral Galen-Kor and his followers. Meanwhile, Shi’ar guardian Deathcry is mocking the primitive nature of Earth technology. Captain America and Vision have managed to detect the Kree signal in Upstate New York. Black Widow assigns Vision, Crystal, Hercules, and Black Knight to investigate while she and Cap will contact reserve members of the team. Deathcry insists on going to New York with them; Cap questions this but Dane points out that she has the most experience against the Kree….

At the Kree base in New York, Dylon Kur questions the wisdom of Admiral Galen-Kor in allowing the Avengers to locate them this soon. The Admiral enters and Kur confronts him directly, receiving a blaster to the face in return. Kor explains that he wants the Avengers to suffer and then they can destroy the planet….

As Dane is readying the Quinjet for their journey when Sersi enters, which he detects as they are now mind-linked. She wants to go on the mission where she thinks she will be needed. Dane, however, wants her to stay behind to continue tests with Hank Pym; she bristles, knowing he wants to be with Crystal. Dane has to struggle to calm her down but he succeeds, using their mental link….

Elsewhere, Crystal confides in Vision that she is falling in love with Dane. Vision suggests that would be an impediment to her reconciliation with Quicksilver but she doubts if that is possible any longer. After she leaves, Deathcry reveals she was listening; she thinks Earth manners are absurd and offers to show Vision that she does a lot of things impolitely….

Once the Quinjet is in the air, Deathcry recognizes Crystal as an Inhuman, her Kree stain still clear. Dane mentions to Herc that the Kree may be in the right as he did kill their Supreme Intelligence; Herc points out that their ruler was a monster, who unleashed a bomb on his own people. As they approach the farmhouse, the Kree release an EMP that knocks Vision out of the sky then seconds later shuts down all the systems in the Quinjet. Emerging from the wreckage, the heroes see the Nega-Bomb drawn down from the sky by a tractor beam. Then the Kree arrive and blast them all, with only Hercules left standing but added blows from the Universal Weapon take him down. As the Avengers are taken captive, Galen-Kor mentions an ally who hates the Avengers as much as they do. He has delivered his part of the bargain, now they must deliver theirs. But a hand rises from the rubble [it’s Vision]….

Avengers, The (1963 series) #365 Review by (October 4, 2025)
Comments: Part two of three parts. Black Knight killed the Supreme Intelligence in issue #347. Cap and Black Widow never do manage to contact any reserve members of the Avengers; Hank Pym was already visiting. For the 30th anniversary of the Avengers, the issue includes portraits of the Avengers (Hector Hernandez, Andrew Paquette), the Gatherers (Brian Pelletier, Fred Fredericks), Black Panther (Clarke Hawbaker), Arkon and Thundra (Brian Pelletier, Greg Adams), the Avengers versus the X-Men (Michael Avon Oeming).

Review: Epting and Palmer’s art makes this issue look a lot cooler than it is. So far the Kree are a duller version of the Brethren (#334-339) or the Gatherers (#343-375) who were mean people who at least had distinct personalities. And now we have Deathcry who, so far, is a scarier looking version of Thundra. And the abbreviated plot is a bit of a disappointment as it’s wrapped up quickly next issue. Odd, the three parts of this story are only half of the issue, 364 and 366 pairing it with another story and 365 adding a bunch of pin-ups. Hope they don’t mess this up…
