Avengers #65 Review by (February 13, 2021)
This is part 1 of the 6-part Red Zone story arc.

J G Jones painted the cover, as he will for the rest of the storyline plus #71. But he's put Wasp on it and she's not inside.

Albert Deschesne helps Richard Starkings with the lettering as usual.

The Mount Rushmore setting of the cover is correct, but the presence of Wasp is a mistake. She and Yellowjacket are presumably still on vacation in Las Vegas (as of last issue) and will miss the whole thing. They'll have there own adventure there in #70.

Iron Man's not here but he and Black Panther will join in next issue, and Falcon will complete the lineup in #68.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Avengers #65 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
A red mist descends on the Mount Rushmore Monument killing everyone it engulfs. David makes sure his wife Gail and young son Paul get away in their car. But as she drives away she sees blotches appearing on her skin.

Park Ranger Tom Hawkins hitches a lift with an ambulance into the danger zone so he can help. In Keystone he sees the sick being airlifted out by helicopters, but there are plenty dead who can't be helped. He learns that they are being taken south to Custer State Park to avoid the gas which is being blown eastwards. But the Ranger thinks the wind is actually blowing *that* way.

Gail arrives in town with a crash and with her dying breath she asks someone to help her son. Paul is already showing symptoms when Captain America picks him up and gives him to Vision to take to 1 of the departing choppers. Vizh ghosts through the wall of a 'copter with the boy. Some soldiers tell him the chopper won't take any extra weight. So the synthezoid throws their guns out of the door and says there's room now.

Cap runs into Hawkins who tells him about the wrong wind direction. But Cap 1st wants to save some people trapped in an RV by Gail's crashed car. He tries to lift the car until She-Hulk takes it away with ease. Ant-Man, Jack Of Hearts, Scarlet Witch and Warbird are with her. Apparently they stopped on the way to clear a 20-car pile-up off the Interstate.

Hawkins repeats his wind warning but General Feaster arrives to say that the problem has been detected and they're going to get the helicopters that have gone to Custer Park to reload their 'cargo' and take them elsewhere. Scarlet Witch says she can give them more time to complete the evacuation. She affects the chaotic dance of molecules in the air to stall the progress of the gas for a while.

Vision arrives with some hazmat suits for his comrades, which the synthezoid himself doesn't need of course. Cap, Witch and Ant-Man prepare to suit up. Steve Rogers asks Jack Hart and Jennifer Walters whether their invulnerability will be enough. JOH is going to risk it but She-Hulk plays safe. Warbird is to stay behind and coordinate with the troops to help survivors.

The General says the CDC has declared this a Red Zone and orders the Avengers to stand down. But Cap leads his team in, dividing them into 3 pairs. He will go with She-Hulk. Vision and Scarlet Witch will make a familiar team. And Ant-Man and Jack had better learn to bury their differences and work together. Scott Lang complains that his helmet wouldn't fit inside the suit, but Jack tells him there won't be any insects inside the Zone to communicate with.
