The search for She-Hulk part 4: With friends like these

Synopsis

Avengers #75 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
She-Hulk turned savage during the Red Zone arc and ran away from the Avengers. Jack Of Hearts' alien physiology had been draining gamma radiation from her body and upsetting the balance of her system. Jennifer Walters has spent the time since then avoiding changing to her alter-ego and seeking her cousin Bruce Banner/Hulk for help. He too is on the run again these days with the army after him. Captain America, Iron Man and Scarlet Witch found Jen in Bone, Idaho in #72 and Shulk trashed them in #73. Ex-Avenger Hawkeye found her last issue but so did Bruce followed by the army and Doc Samson. The only way Clint Barton could think of to stop her going on a rampage against the army and further wreck Bone was to shoot Bruce to make him Hulk out. Now it's Hulk vs Shulk ...

... and Hawkeye gets knocked off the side of the mountain. But he's saved from a long fall by Cap and joined by IM and SW. Tony Stark puts into action the plan he came up with last issue. He calls Ant-Man at Avengers Embassy to send Jack Of Hearts to defuse She-Hulk by draining her gamma radiation. Scott Lang points out that Jack Hart is locked in the Zero Room for 14 hours to prevent him exploding. Stark suggests he use his old burglary skills to defeat the time-lock.

The Avengers just have to keep the Hulks busy but stop them killing each other. Wanda Maximoff, despite a broken wrist, casts a hex to turn the surrounding snow to clouds of steam to confuse them. But Hulk locates *them* and scatters Cap and Hawk. Steve Rogers somehow winds up with 1 of Clint's arrows in his shoulder. And Hulk grabs Cap's thrown shield.

Ant-Man goes tiny and enters the lock mechanism armed with a paper-clip and 2 ants. It's a triple lock each with its own clock. He needs to change all 3 clocks simultaneously to say time's up, so the ants will have to manipulate 2 of the clocks. And it works! But JOH has only been in isolation for 2 hours so his explosive energy is still dangerously high, and he blows the door off. His armoured costume has only had time to disintegrate a bit and his skin feels like it's on fire. But Scott tells him he's needed.

In Bone Sheriff Sheryl Howards and her deputy son Lance face down Doc Samson and the army. They don't want their town wrecked any more than it is. Samson reluctantly says they'll give the Avengers some time to deal with the situation. Cap and Clint may be losing to Hulk but Shellhead and the Witch are facing She-Hulk. Shulkie's strength is almost Hulk-level in her current state and she flattens the Golden Avenger and damages his armour systems. Then she turns her attention back to her cousin. (And Cap's got his shield back.)

Then Jack arrives. In *his* current state he's doesn't know if he can control the strength of his explosion, or reabsorb the energy. He could be a cure that's worse than the disease. But Iron Man says he's the only chance they've got. So the Avengers make their escape and JOH plummets down like a bomb on the 2 Hulks. There's a loud explosion, and when the dust clears the Hulks are both human and Jack has absorbed all the expended energy. But just before he passes out he gives Jennifer Walters just the right amount of gamma radiation to return her to the non-savage She-Hulk she was before the Red Zone.

Bruce Banner checks that his cousin is still alive and then slips away before the army can find him. She-Hulk wakes to be welcomed back into the Avengers' fold. Ant-Man arrives in a quinjet with a containment device to take Jack Hart safely back to the Zero Room. But they can't risk JOH draining gamma radiation from Shulk again so 1 of them must leave the team. But in the meantime she welcomes Hawkeye back to the team with a kiss for helping her, and then smacks him for shooting Bruce.

They survey the devastation of Bone (and we see waitress Mona finding her son Jonah). The Avengers and Stark Enterprises will help the town rebuild. The media will blame Hulk as usual, but She-Hulk feels immensely guilty. And Bruce has to continue his lonely existence while she has her Avengers family around her.

Avengers #75 Review by (March 19, 2021)
All the Avengers here (including Hawkeye) will go straight to next issue, where they'll be rejoined by Black Panther, Falcon and Vision.

Hulk will fit in several more guest apps before he gets back to #77 of his own 2000 series. Starting with a crowd-scene cameo in Captain America Theatre Of War: America The Beautiful and fighting MODOK in Cap & Falcon (2004) #11-12.

Doc Samson will appear in a sequel to this arc in She-Hulk (2004) #11-12 after Avengers Disassembled. She consults the psychiatrist about her guilt over Bone which she thinks is causing her power fluctuations. This continues into She-Hulk (2005) #1.
