Synopsis

Battle Scars #2 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Captain America takes on Taskmaster while telling SHIELD agents to get Marcus Johnson to cover. But the villain tosses a grenade and while Cap is dealing with that, he lunges at Marcus—only to be shocked by SHIELD Director Daisy Johnson (a/k/a Quake). Johnson takes Marcus away while Cap returns to the battle with Taskmaster….

Interlude: The mysterious old man is informed that Taskmaster has failed and the target is now in SHIELD custody; he throws a fit and orders, “Prepare the mercenary”….

Aboard the Helicarrier, Daisy Johnson explains that his mother was likely killed because she saw something she shouldn’t have and now the baddies are after Marcus. Dum Dum Dugan explains Marcus’ record of heroism to a junior agent….

While the team physician tends to Marcus’ injuries, Captain America stops by. Marcus asks him what’s going on and Cap deflects the implied questions by telling him who Taskmaster is before leaving. Left to cool his heels in a locked room, Marcus gets bored and assaults his guards, hijacks a flying car and takes off. SHIELD agents track him to downtown Atlanta where they find the car—and the tracker implanted in him. Marcus surprises them and beats the four agents who are trying not to hurt him and escapes again. This time he is observed from a rooftop by a masked figure with a Scorpio on his hood. Marcus heads to a motel where he calls in his buddy Cheese to aid him in getting behind the mystery. Step one: find Taskmaster….

Review / Commentaries

Battle Scars #2 Review by (December 17, 2019)

Review: And now it’s personal…. More action, more suspense, more mystery and Dum Dum Dugan gets to do the exposition, letting us know what a hero Marcus Johnson is. And now he’s on the offensive….

Comments: Bannered “Shattered Heroes.” Issue includes a note from Tom Brennan who replaced Alejandro Arbona as editor. “The Mercenary” mentioned by the mysterious old man is revealed next issue to be Deadpool. The mysterious old man is revealed in issue #5 to be Orion/Viktor Uvarov, head of Leviathan, as mentioned earlier. Plot: Cullen Bunn, Matt Fraction, Chris Yost.
