Synopsis

Black Panther: The Man Without Fear (2011 series) #521 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Disgruntled working man Josh Glenn becomes a follower of the Hate-Monger on the internet, falling into the dark world of the conspiracy theorist, becoming an anti-immigrant blogger. The obsession loses him his job, his wife, and his freedom when he is caught by the Black Panther breaking into a pawn shop to steal guns. He is homeless and begging on the streets when one of the Serpent’s hammers falls from the sky and Thing is possessed by Angrir, Breaker of Souls. The hammer awakened the disembodied spirit of the Hate-Monger, dragging it to earth where it detected someone who remembered it and it found and possessed Josh Glenn. Josh then touched a police officer and the man became a follower of the Hate-Monger….

Fear has struck the world and T’Challa, using the name Dr. Okwonko, is helping the people of Hell’s Kitchen by running a soup kitchen/medical clinic for victims of the Fear. At night, he goes out a Black Panther, protecting an immigrant woman from white assailants. He escorts her home but Josh Glenn snaps photos that appear in the next day’s newspaper, painting the Panther as a vigilante terrorist. T’Challa approaches Foggy Nelson who is now facing trouble for helping Okwonko with his immigrant status. T’Challa assures him nothing will happen but Foggy isn’t very confident….

Dr. Okwonko is at the Devil’s Diner when a white mob enters, led by Julian Chambliss, former owner of the property now claiming the diner was stolen from him. Hate-Monger stirs up increased resentment and hate in Chambliss and the others. Sofija tries to make peace and she is assaulted while the Hate-Monger convinces his followers that Okwonko started the violence. T’Challa is seized and threatened by American Panther, a brutish baddie, who claims to protect the American people. T’Challa slugs the big guy but it has no effect. Okwonko and Sifija leave quietly and the Hate-Monger continues to stir up hostility in his mob. Outside, Okwonko is arrested by Homeland Security and placed in the back seat of a car, where he finds Foggy Nelson also in custody….

Review / Commentaries

Black Panther: The Man Without Fear (2011 series) #521 Review by (March 4, 2025)

Review: There is something scarier than a bunch of giant guys with hammers smashing everything and that’s people turning against one another when manipulated by a demagogue with no soul. And the reason it’s scarier? It’s that there are no giant guys with hammers smashing everything in real life but there are a lot of people out there playing with hearts and minds, stirring up anger, fear, and hatred. And I don’t want to talk about the real-life villains because no one comes to this site to hear my political views, not even me. But I will tell you that this is a powerful and effective story with intense art, bringing a different dimension to the Fear Itself event.

Comments: Title is a play on book/movie title, FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS, by Hunter S. Thompson. Story set between FEAR ITSELF #3 and 4. First appearance of the new Hate Monger (Josh Glenn). The original Hate Monger, the spirit of Adolf Hitler transferred into new bodies, made his debut in FANTASTIC FOUR #21. First appearance of Julian Chambliss. First appearance of American Panther. Sofija was introduced in issue #513.
